She seems calm, cool, and collected—**that's often the mask**. Many such women aren't "hiding drama"; they're fiercely independent, with non-negotiable standards forged from past chaos. They refuse to settle for unequal effort, drama, or a "project" partner who drains their peace. Dating history? Frequently a mix of chasing excitement (bad boys who bring thrill but zero stability) then pivoting to self-protection after burnout. High-value women learn: better alone than mismatched. Financial independence + emotional maturity means they spot red flags early and won't trade serenity for mediocre company. No mystery why she's single—she's choosing it. Plenty of men approach, few measure up. It's not "something else"; it's discernment. Wondering her history reveals patterns, but the real tell is her unapologetic self-flagellation.

Tires with 11,000 miles and a nail. Firestone told me they are not repairable. Firestone said this is not repairable because of the location and that I would need a new tire. It's a slow leak, about 1-2 psi a day. I am in disbelief that this is not repairable.. Can I not just get a fix kit? 🤧

@shagbark_hick I’m honestly not sure what you could even do to bring a town to life unless you have millions and millions of dollars What could Middle class people do? I guess you could try and run for local offices

This is a bleak read, but I can't argue with it. He's basically correct. More or less every small Upstate NY town I have any connection to is like this. The residents do seem to want to "fade away in peaceful stagnation." They like to bulldoze things, tear down buildings, prevent newcomers from ever coming, obstruct every conceivable advancement, and so on. Then -- at Town Board meetings, they dutifully and unironically opine the "lack of young families around here" as if they themselves did not actively and enthusiastically cause that problem. These rituals can be quite the display to witness when you know the town business and who's ever behind it. Quite the same for those institutions within small towns: the Churches are in a state of managed decline (which they defend rabidly), the fraternal orgs, the Historical Societies, even many restaurants, bars, gas stations, hotels, etc too. They have a way of dumping hot oil on their feet and then complaining bitterly about they can't walk, so to speak. Perhaps, then, the death of small town America is not at all what we tend to think it is -- perhaps what's really behind it are whatever forces have caused the raw number of high-agency, risk-tolerant, footloose, enterprising, and rurally-inclined people to decline. Without go-getters who arrive, roll up their sleeves, and say to hell with the dysfunctional locals, it's a sure shot that these towns will rot and die. This system only works, by the way, if those go-getters are benevolent patriots and Christians with an earnest hope of impressing the locals by building something great. But when for lack of such people, corporate developers, private equity firms, "Airbnb people," and so on fill that same void, the result is universally awful. And because of that awful result, rural yokels become (justifiably) EVEN MORE mistrusting of the much-needed outside influence, money, and energy that it'd take to fix their towns. I myself have been guilty of this at times. This makes for a kind of death-loop. I don't want to be talking this way, but this is essentially how it is. I'd love to see the people I grew up around spontaneously self-organize their towns into something excellent -- but they're simply never going to do it, even as they cry out about how bad things have gotten here.
Connor O’Leary@Connorpoleary

"And the locals may complain about decline here, but they also don't really want to see a Renaissance either." Coastal rightists think people in dying towns in the interior are victims of capitalist "exploitation". The reality is they are victims of their own pathologies. These towns are dying because most of the people in them are low-agency and dysfunctional. You absolutely can revive small towns--I used to live in one. Within the 1st generation, you had a thriving little community with a school, small college, and multiple successful businesses (including one boasting over $100 million in annual revenue, that employed a plurality of the population). But this requires (among other things): 1. A bunch of high-agency types with the numbers and drive to remake the place over the objections of the locals, who would rather fade away in peaceful stagnation. 2. A bunch of high-agency people who are willing to build lives from scratch in the middle of nowhere--an extremely rare breed these days that might only exist among the very religious.

@shagbark_hick I’d imagine it’s because most of x is monetized. A lot of it is unnatural and maybe gets stale like a tv show that’s aired too long until they’re forced to change or make new It’d be like streamers being at bars, not fun Just an idea

I'm somewhat surprised that after taking nearly a 3-month break from this place, I can log in and it is as if I never left. You just pick right back up where you started, nobody skips a beat. Whereas IRL, if you stopped going to your daily pub for 3 months, then came back -- there's a solid chance the vibe would've shifted quite substantially. I've even found this to be true at very old bars with a cast of lifelong locals: new bartender, someone dies, new set of guys starts coming, etc. Seems like as compared with the offline world, "internet culture" is abnormally constant. The white noise is loud enough that none of the particulars tend to have anything quite like the ripple effect they'd have IRL. Makes me wonder what a 5-year break would feel like.

@shagbark_hick It’s kind of communistic how much people hate when others dress nice or different I understand not wanting to see furries dressed up and that etc. but you should be societally acceptable to dress up in nice clothes. Ppl are envious

I think it's profoundly funny that in an era where slovenly dress predominates -- and at a time when few would make mention of even the most ugly, garrish outfits -- it's VERBOTEN to dress "weirdly." You're "drawing attention to yourself" if you don't wear the polyester uniform sold by Aeropostale at the mall. Absolute uniformity is required, even though the "uniform" was invented by a gang of corporate knuckleheads more or less yesterday. God forbid a woman wear a nice linen skirt instead of skin-tight leggings made of fertility-killing plastic. Heaven help us if a man wears any hat other than a little-league-style "baseball cap." Yet while those who dress that way are hassled for looking "weird," the streets are teeming with people ambling about in their pajamas, women exposing their finer cracks and crevasses in surgical detail, and men wearing garb that was formerly reserved only for homosexuals in Key West. It seems to me that those calling us "weird" for dressing as we do have no real alternative to propose. If the message is: "wear the expensive corporate polyester crap at the mall or else," I'm not interested.

@0xleegenz I think its cause when you don't have some people micromanaging you, then you realize you know what to do, at least if your not new. But when someone's always over your shoulder, you start doubting yourself or making things more complicated than they need to be.

You think you hate the government? Become a small business owner in the US a then get back to me. You don't hate them enough. Tell me why, as a person running a small business owner with 1 part time employee has a 5 digit tax bill. Are we winning yet?!? When I worked a w2 job, we would get pretty nice refunds, but even after having children with the "child tax credit", all the money that gets saved throughout the year gets sent to the federal government to pay the Taliban millions per month, to give Israel unlimited funds to fight their wars, to give Ukraine BILLIONS of dollars. I am at my limit to say the least. Why do I work so fucking hard to give the government all my money when they do absolutely jack shit for me? I am gonna become a fucking pirate.
