@TomTugendhat I actually find his comments quite insulting. Yet again we’re expecting the armed forces to do more, and operate in an incredibly difficult and volatile environment, whilst also continuing to hollow out their capability to perform.

@PolemicTMM @PhilRaynolds I’d personally much prefer to see a wider expansion of “white collar” apprenticeships. We need to move people from low & semi-skilled work into skilled work. On the job training will be a better route to achieve that.

When multinational companies say “skill shortage” what they really mean is: “we don’t want to put in the effort to train and retain good talent, so need unending immigration to keep costs down”

@PolemicTMM @PhilRaynolds Not sure that is true. Wage inflation, due to a skills shortage, is rife in some sectors. However, companies are universally rubbish at investing in training and growing their own talent. Due to this, our pool of talent in this country is diminishing, not meeting growing demand.

@pinstripedline Given current circumstances, I can’t help but think that we should abandon our aspirations to be a blue water navy and instead invest in our ground forces.

I'd be worried if this conversation didn't happen. When budgets are tight, its vital to understand the cost, and impact of many scenarios. Nothing should be unthinkable, if only to give context and insight for decision makers to fully understand the options they could take.
