I am the VP of Developer Productivity at a company with 4,000 engineers. Last year I launched the Velocity Shield program. Mandatory AI coding assistants across every team. Copilot. Cursor. Internal tools we built on top of Claude. Opt-out required VP approval. Nobody opts out of something that requires VP approval. Pull requests per engineer doubled in four months. The metrics have never been better. Last month a senior engineer couldn't explain his own pull request during code review. Not a junior. A senior. Eight years. He said "the model handled that part." His reviewer signed off. That's specialization. We created a #copilot-wins Slack channel. Engineers post screenshots of prompts that generated entire modules. Hundreds of messages a week. Nobody posts screenshots of themselves reading documentation. That's adoption. Three engineers told me privately they've forgotten how to set up a project from scratch. They've been tab-completing their way through architecture decisions for fourteen months. That's efficiency. There was an architect — I will call her Priya because that is not her name — who presented a whiteboard analysis showing that completion acceptance rate was inversely correlated with code comprehension scores. The more they accepted, the less they understood. She sent it to my skip-level. Her next performance review said she "resisted tooling alignment." She transferred to infrastructure. She does not use Copilot there. Nobody asked why. The metrics have never been better. I invented a metric called the Developer Leverage Index. DLI = lines of code shipped per hour of active coding time. It has never been higher. It cannot measure what the engineer understands about the code. It was not designed to. That's by design. Our production incidents are up 34%. Time-to-resolution is up 70%. Engineers stare at stack traces they didn't write and can't trace. They paste the error back into the model. The model suggests a fix. They ship it. Nobody knows if it worked or just stopped logging. That's iteration. I write my own quarterly reports by hand. I do not use the tool for anything that goes to the board. When someone asked why, I said I prefer precision for executive communications. Nobody followed up. The metrics have never been better. I won the Augmented Engineer award at our last all-hands. A glass plaque shaped like a terminal cursor. It sits next to a framed photo of the team before the mandate. Forty-two people in the photo. Nineteen still work here. The plaque is newer than the photo. I approved headcount for twelve enablement contractors. Their job is to teach engineers the skills the mandate destroyed. The contractors use the tool to teach. Last week an engineer with eleven years of experience failed a live coding interview at another company. He had mass-deployed production systems for us. He could not write a function from memory. His recruiter told him the market has moved on. The market moved on because I moved it. The metrics have never been better. The engineers have never been worse. That is the same sentence.
