AI has now solved a major open problem -- one of the best known Erdos problems called the unit distance problem, one of Erdos's favourite questions and one that many mathematicians had tried. openai.com/index/model-di…

I remember when SLAM (simultaneous location and mapping) was a big unsolved problem-- late 80s and early 90s. I tried and failed to find a good method. I had a feeling it was impossible, but that was obviously wrong, because animals can do it, so I didn't tell anyone of my suspicion. And fortunately I was wrong! Now it's in our appliances!

The @maticrobots vacuum is insanely smart, just watched it figure out a half inch door sill, it first approached head on, then when that failed it reversed and went over diagonally without issue I just had it map my apt and it only bumped something twice when starting SLAM up

@peterrhague No. Sorry, Antimatter is a terrible storage medium for power. Too hard to couple the annihilation products to productive use.

Europe has a lead - in fact a monopoly - in the production, storage and transport of antimatter. This can in principle be used for spacecraft propulsion. Even now, production is still at least 3 orders of magnitude off the minimum quantities needed - but maybe this is a technology we should be investing in now. Increasing production, mastering long term storage, and building more efficient engines would all be hugely expensive. But the end product would be the ultimate form of space propulsion. home.cern/news/news/expe…

In case people are wondering, I am not stopping development of localwriter, and it is on track to get new agentic features of its own soon :^)

This connectome-only drosophila em from eon producing naturalistic behavior is incredibly startling if it's real, and may imply it's much easier to make somewhat functional ems than I thought.
Michael Andregg@michaelandregg

In the case of this fruit fly the weights are determined by how many synapses are connecting to neurons, where the weight is linear with the number of synapses connecting. In the future we'll use a lot more sophisticated modeling based on neuron size and other cell morphology.

@michaelandregg Are you giving its eyes any input or is it going entirely by smell/touch/proprioception?

@michaelandregg Like it already seems to behave kinda like a fly. Is that yellow coloring on the ground an indicator that there is a simulated food smell?

@JohnUBalis @eonsys No retraining in the case of the fruit fly. The weights are set by the synapses in the connectome.

You do need to master this tooling but that alone will not make you stand out or protect you.

There is definitely a trace of sublimity in running local agents in un-terminated, iterative loops.

40 years is a long time! LibreOffice's lineage is older than vim and linux.

If I understand right the current LibreOffice codebase has a 40+ year lineage (not sure how much remains of the original code), and at different times has been maintained by different entities, so it's not terribly surprising that it is the way it is.

Opus4.6 failed to oneshot adding a "chat with document" feature to localwriter. LibreOffice extension development is an impressively unlit Labyrinth.
