Dorothea Lange used her camera to capture life in America during the Great Depression. Best known for her work with the Farm Security Administration (FSA), Lange documented the lives of sharecroppers, migrant workers, and displaced families during the 1930s. Her images brought national attention to communities that were often overlooked and helped shape the future of documentary photography. Today, NYPL holds about 40,000 photographs from the FSA collection, taken during the 1930s and 1940s by Lange and other photographers.

A group of dancers performed outside the Kennedy Center and the Lincoln Memorial on Presidents' Day in protest of the killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. Broadway and former Kennedy Center dancers were a part of the performance, according to Playbill. The team of dancers shared on social media that they were able to complete the full performance near the Lincoln Memorial, but were shut down by authorities outside the Kennedy Center midway through the dance.

Nearly 200 pieces of New Deal-era artwork, once on display in our nation’s post offices, are missing or significantly damaged. A part of then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s push to raise America’s stature on the global art stage and provide employment amidst the Great Depression, nearly 1,700 murals hung in U.S. post offices. But over time, and as the U.S. Postal Service faced serious financial challenges, some of the art has vanished, been painted over or is unaccounted for. That’s according to new reporting from the Washington Post’s Jacob Bogage. PBS News’ Geoff Bennett (@GeoffRBennett) spoke with Bogage about this project and why efforts to preserve these pieces of American history haven’t materialized.
