when asked about her background (heritage) she says she's Ghanaian not Ethnically Ghanaian. only western countries try to pretend there is no ethnicity to the native inhabitants. 3 generations of 'ethnic' English would never be considered Nigerian even if brought up there. or chinese if brought up in China.

People are arguing against a position that no one is actually making. No one is saying a woman of Ghanaian heritage born in England is ethnically English. The argument is this: you can be civically English without being ethnically English. Take @estherckrakue and me. We both have Ghanaian surnames and neither of us are white. She is fully ethnically Ghanaian. I am half ethnically Ghanaian and half ethnically English. So I am ethnically and civically English. She is not ethnically English, but she is still civically English. That is the entire point people keep dodging. We both live here. We have both integrated. That makes us both English in a civic sense. The real disagreement is this: Some people want “English” to be ethnic only, and push everyone else into “British”. But the public does not think that way. Polling shows most people are comfortable calling black and brown Brits English in a civic sense. So what is this really about? Why are some people so determined to pretend civic English identity doesn’t exist?

not really. many people who aren't 'ethnic nationalists' ( which carries a lot of baggage and political pov) will tell you you have to have some English ethnicity to be English. sure if you put the qualifier on it and say culturally English most will be okay with that. but that's not how ppl speak in reality. when someone says Ian Wright is English they mean something different from when they refer to Gary Lineker as English. Ian Wright = 'culturally' English Gary Lineker = Culturally and ethnically English (a native). - or (as many brits say it)- 'proper' English or 'fully' English (sorry i don't make the rules).

@baylissbaghdad @estherckrakue Fine, but in essence we are talking about the difference between ethnic and civic nationalism which is why I've used those terms. But I'm not going to get tied up with semantics, everyone understands what I am saying.

Just popped in #Waitrose. In the queue, over 70s with their trolleys each with a copy of either the Daily Mail or the Telegraph. This is one reason why Reform has done well. 2 tabloids that aggressively promote the far-right. Depressing.

I’ve see people suggest Kier Starmer is a worse PM than Boris Johnson. Not even slightly. Starmer is just mediocre, a deer caught in the headlights of multiple crises. Johnson was actively malevolent. He tore apart the social fabric of this country in order to depress your wages.

Let's be clear. There's a lot of issues with this HBO Harry Potter series. Extra unnecessary added details, pointless raceswaps of minor characters that I, like many other Potterheads, could have overlooked. But Black Snape is such an insulting slap in the face it's a 100% deal breaker.

Fun fact: I went to the same school as @mehdirhasan. But they didn’t teach about thought-terminating cliches. He must have picked up the habit later on. @JohnCleese has always been anti religion. Obviously. Islam has always pushed the idea of killing infidels. Obviously. These things are both provably and obviously true. But by using words like ‘bigoted’ and ‘red pilled’, he’s able to dismiss truth and continue in his cult.
Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan

Difficult to describe how insanely bigoted John Cleese has become. Just total far-right nuts. Redpilled himself.

What? Aggressive Acts for Territorial Expansion or Neighbor Intimidation: These involve military/paramilitary actions, island-building, or incursions to assert or seize control, often justified by historical claims but violating international norms (e.g., UNCLOS rulings ignored). 1979: Sino-Vietnamese War — China invaded northern Vietnam (claiming to "teach a lesson" over Vietnam's Cambodia invasion and Soviet ties); captured cities, then withdrew after heavy losses (~60,000 total casualties). Followed by border skirmishes into the 1980s. 1988: Johnson South Reef Skirmish (South China Sea) — Chinese forces clashed with Vietnam, seizing reefs in the Spratly Islands and killing Vietnamese soldiers. Expanded China's physical presence. 1994: Occupation of Mischief Reef — China seized this Philippine-claimed reef in the Spratlys and began construction, marking early "salami-slicing" tactics. 2010s–present: South China Sea artificial island-building and militarization — Starting ~2013, China reclaimed ~3,200 acres on disputed reefs (e.g., Fiery Cross, Subi, Mischief); built military bases, airstrips, missile systems, and declared them sovereign Chinese territory. Harasses Philippines/Vietnam/Malaysia vessels daily; ignores 2016 Hague ruling. Covers ~90% of the sea via "nine-dash line." 2010–present: Escalation around Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands (East China Sea, vs. Japan) — Increased coast guard incursions, aircraft patrols, and 2013 Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) declaration overlapping Japanese airspace. Regular "grey zone" pressure to challenge Japanese administration (e.g., near-daily presence in 2023–2024). 2017: Doklam Standoff (vs. India/Bhutan) — Chinese road-building in disputed Bhutanese territory; 73-day military standoff with India. Part of broader Himalayan pressure. 2020: Galwan Valley Clash (Ladakh, vs. India) — Deadly hand-to-hand fighting (first fatalities since 1975); 20+ Indian soldiers killed, Chinese casualties acknowledged later. Followed Chinese incursions and infrastructure buildup; part of ongoing LAC violations. Ongoing (intensified under Xi): Frequent military drills/airspace incursions around Taiwan (hundreds annually) to intimidate and assert unification claims. "Salami-slicing" encroachments on Bhutan, Nepal, and other neighbors. Transnational repression (harassing diaspora activists abroad). Notes on scope and sources: These acts are not exhaustive but represent the pattern of CCP behavior to eliminate domestic threats and revise borders/maritime claims. Tibet and Xinjiang repression combines both motives (internal control + cultural/territorial assimilation). Paracel Islands seizure (1974) falls just outside the strict 50-year window but set the template for later SCS actions. Independent verification comes from satellite imagery, survivor testimonies, leaked documents, and UN/HR reports. The CCP denies many (calling them "internal affairs" or "training centers"), but the scale is corroborated globally. If you want sources for any specific incident or deeper details on one, let me know.

🇨🇳China is the ONLY modern world power to ascend to its status, in peace. Spain was an empire. France was an empire. The UK was an empire. The USA is an empire. China is a global trading partner. We should learn from China's example. Facts matter.✔️
