@MrJoshuaYoder @CCFCMando And I applaud you for actually monitoring his activity. If the majority of parents were like you and me - this issue need never be raised.
It still stands that YouTube has the strongest parental controls and moderates heavily. He may watch crap but it’s not as damaging as TikTok
English

@CCFCMando @OAFIDAN My son was watching a ton of brain rot crap on YouTube. I banned it at my house for him until he turned 18 and moved out. Yes YouTube has a lot of good content, but it’s also full of really idiotic content, that’s very harmful.
English

I hate Labour, but I don’t see how anyone is opposed to this. Kids do not need social media, it’s incredibly harmful. We also can’t trust parents to parent effectively nowadays, so something has to be done 🤷🏻♂️

🚨 BREAKING: Keir Starmer has officially announced a social media ban for under-16s in the UK
English

@darrengrimes What is considered ‘harmful’ content though? We grew up with free access to the most depraved shit - the difference was it was often time gated.
Perhaps the government should’ve considered a specific regulator targeted towards Minors Internet Use rather than a straight ban.
English

@gxrethclarke In an age of Unlimited Minutes& Unlimited text on all phone plans, WhatsApp, Discord and a multitude of other apps not affected by the ban… 👀
English

On another note - I lived in the *literal* middle of nowhere growing up. The only way I could connect with my school friends was via social media. How are kids in these isolated communities meant to function?

🚨 NEW: Under-16s in the UK will be banned from the following 10 social media apps TikTok YouTube Snapchat Instagram X Reddit Facebook Twitch Kick Threads

@OAFIDAN @CCFCMando I’m on the side of accountability over heavy-handed government intervention. I’m saying if they claim YouTube Kids is exempt then they must trust it otherwise it shouldn’t be exempt either. If they trust it then providers could be held responsible with parents the final barrier.
English

@Nakir_Eldrun Finally! Someone thinking outside the box! A regulatory standard for ‘Minor Online Access’ could’ve really squashed this whole thing.
English

@OAFIDAN Some of the issues lie with parents and monitoring.
The biggest issue is that tech companies are allowed to self-regulate, make up rules as they go along, and use those rules to prevent people from being safe online. We need a government regulator, not blanket age related user..
English

@Nakir_Eldrun Absolutely agree. Which is why I say YouTube was a bad move.
Hell, even Instagram and Facebook to an extent support the communities mentioned.
If Mr Stahmer could keep kids away from TikTok - I’d sleep easier for sure.
English

@OAFIDAN While information and help with some of these can be obtained from parents and libraries, we have to accept that the biggest source of information and support for many things on the list is Social Media. Banning kids from accessing SM doesn't help.

Undead Never Dies V. IV 〓〓@UndeadCantDie
"Stare at a wall" is so apt bc there is literally nothing for kids to do here anymore. Parks are for young children, so teens get chased out, everything is super expensive so you can't go on a day out, and there's precious little nature left to explore. Thats all you can do.
English

@MontyDean1A4 Has no one thought about better teaching of online safety in schools? We had sex education classes for sure - didn’t stop 10 people in our year getting pregnant at 16 🙄
English

@Goodbob888 @CCFCMando I’m not saying it IS bad parenting. Cause half our parents didn’t even know (I’m 34 btw).
Kids will access it whatever way they want- if the risk outweighs the reward then they’ll think twice.
English

@OAFIDAN @CCFCMando Those peers having bad parents should not means digital ID for the whole country.
English

@OAFIDAN ..bans. Firstly make big tech pay their taxes. Secondly force them to block unsafe and illegal content, and stop shadow bans for people making legitimate free speech statements, while banning dangerous vitriolic content from the far-right and incels.
English

@MontyDean1A4 @CCFCMando See the poll on my profile. I’m fascinated to know where people feel the issues really need addressing.
English

@CCFCMando @OAFIDAN i agree that social media is bad but stopping people going on the most popular ones is not a way to stop the issue. I cannot see this being useful for combatting the issues that come out of social media. they need to be solved directly.
English

@DeviousPL @CCFCMando YouTube kids has been a haven for issue from its inception.
Again, people need to stop deflecting onto service providers and take accountability themselves.
If I let my son play outside, I’m not gonna let him get in my car and drive to the motorway to play on it.
English

@OAFIDAN @CCFCMando YouTube Kids appears to be exempt - but that puts it back onto the tech company to curate properly. So why couldn’t this be the design from the start?
