1. I said I would put the time and effort in to write a Celsius recovery plan. I realise it's not possible to make everyone happy but think this is as fair as possible to all classes of depositor. dropbox.com/s/bo6urt8mld0z…

@furryschizo Moderation doesn’t work anymore. The cheats are too advanced to be reliably caught by eye unless you have a mod watching someone play multiple games in a row. They’d have to have thousands of mods doing this.

Riot would rather develop the most intrusive malware ever disguised as an anti cheat than moderate their games like every other company

@ManaByte Anyone else go one step further and wonder if it’s because they think Vanguard can scan your drives and might find something they don’t want found… 🤔

@tielborlis2 @b1oominn They make a lot of money from these games though, overreaching for nefarious means would risk that and cause scandal. Of course, they could push you to use their hardware in cloud gaming, something some are also keen to see - you’ll own nothing.

@b1oominn Unless they start using it for other reasons besides cheating? Don't tell me you're one of those smooth brained nimwits who think calling out riot's actions = defending cheaters because they are also cheaters Think more than a few seconds on this and hopefully you realize

@b1oominn They’re upset that it’s quite invasive - it’s designed to be that way though, because the cheats are.

Let’s walk through how that courtroom drama plays out: Cheater: "Your Honor, Riot bricked my $6,000 PC!" Riot: "Actually, we just updated Vanguard to enforce standard Windows IOMMU security protocols. If they unplug the illegal hardware cheat device from their motherboard, the PC boots perfectly fine." Judge: "Wait, so your computer works, but your specialized cheating hardware doesn't?" Cheater: "Yes! It’s property damage!" Judge: [Bangs gavel so hard it breaks] "Case dismissed. Pay Riot's legal fees." You cannot sue a company because their security system successfully detected your exploit. Riot didn't destroy anything; they just rendered a cheating device useless for cheating. If you spent thousands of dollars on a DMA card just to click on heads in Valorant, your only legal recourse is to sue your parents for giving birth to someone so stupid.

@tielborlis2 @Wickdlol That’s the slippery slope argument which is a valid one. But that’s the compromise you choose for playing their games on your own hardware. Or we go to cloud gaming and you own nothing.

Tons of people on the timeline "Vanguard shouldn't mess with people's PC if they're cheating" Man I wish they were allowed to fully nuke the PC of cheaters... Cheaters ruin so many games. I would have 0 sympathy if their PC went gg

@NisiraChaosVTA @Orthus_zach @Todredmi @ManaByte As long as people understand how it works and that they’re more likely upset about the level of control kernel-level anti-cheat has it’s fair game. But the latest update didn’t make anything worse for the normal user is the key point.

@Burrito_TTV Adding IOMMU control can’t brick anything, it disables the offending hardware non-destructively. If the DMA card can’t handle the exception gracefully you might get corruption or instability - that’s it. No property damage, no lawsuit.

@CodyBetts4 Yes, it’s a slippery slope. But the same control has been present since 2020 when Vanguard came out. And anyone without a cheater DMA card (99.9% of users) will be unaffected or affected no different than before. That is all. But you have a right to say: it’s invasive, as it is.

I don't think it's in the T&A that a game company is allowed to brick your shit. Ban you? Yes. Destroy your property? No.

@CodyBetts4 There is a risk. I’d say there is a bigger risk (of malware) by installing an unknown DMA card in your system which has even lower level access on a hardware and firmware level.

@CodyBetts4 When you install Valorant and Vanguard you get a UAC prompt asking if it’s allowed to make changes to your system and there is implied consent to their TOS by installing. But yes, anti-cheat is invasive by design, and no, it’s not destroying anything in this update.

@WinterCharmVT Most of the uproar seems to be from the amount of control they have over the system - which Vanguard always had since it came out, not so much how IOMMU works (because it’s clear most of them have no idea what it is or what it can do). We know it doesn’t brick anything.

Let me explain IOMMU simply. the library is hardware. your journal is the game memory. IOMMU is a lock on the journal. Some other person is the hardware cheat. This does not lock other books. This does not break the shelves. This doesn’t destroy the building. This does stop the other person (cheat hardware) from reading *your journal* That’s it. That’s what IOMMU does. Riot stopped cheaters from reading the game memory. No it doesn’t harm your RAM, PC, or even the cheat Hardware. It just blocks it.

@NisiraChaosVTA @Orthus_zach @Todredmi @ManaByte Well, yes, it’s true they do have a kernel-mode driver active on boot (you consented to when installed) and they are using IOMMU (correctly) to isolate and disable offending cheat hardware. Vanguard ran on boot since 2020 and nothing materially changed for non-cheaters since then

@DeviousPL @Orthus_zach @Todredmi @ManaByte If Riot is actually going that far? Then yeah, they are overstepping their bounds by miles long. I just haven't seen anyone post anything showing that is what is actually going on. But I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt. I just want some proof/evidence.

@fawnnivalen On reading more, the uproar seems to be Vanguard having too much control over a system due to its kernel-mode driver, which is true but has always been the case since 2020 when it came out. It’s one of those “acceptable compromises” you have to make to be able to play.

If you are genuinely worried about Vanguard blue-screening your PC, the solution is incredibly simple: Stop buying $200 DMA cards to cheat in a video game. Riot isn't being "too intrusive," they're finally making cheating have actual consequences. If you ruin competitive matches, you deserve to have your OS wiped.

@MrJik6 @MulbearA @vaxryy These DMA cards can be used to bypass FACEIT as well. Vanguard and almost all anti-cheat is invasive, it’s meant to be by design - everyone knew this before but the outrage is all around this latest update which actually uses IOMMU as intended.

@MulbearA @DeviousPL @vaxryy You are aware they did not create IOMMU, but it is in fact a hardware feature, yes? And they just require for it to be on now? The CS2 competitive host Face-It has required it for about a year now too. Vanguard is invasive, yes, should you trust it, idk, but IOMMU isnt related.

@NisiraChaosVTA @Orthus_zach @Todredmi @ManaByte I have spoken to him, he is one of the good ones, a Linux user and doesn’t like companies or others exercising control over the system hardware - which is a fair argument but not specific to this Vanguard update as they had kernel-level access before.

@Orthus_zach @DeviousPL @Todredmi @ManaByte Dude, just shut the fuck up. You're just as guilty for even supporting people who cheat in multiplayer games to fucking start with. If you have to cheat in a multiplayer video game just to enjoy it, then you belong somewhere else like Fortnite or Minecraft.

Heartbreaking act of kindness backfires: Woman stocks community food pantry with nearly $1,800 of groceries, only for it to be completely emptied in under an hour by just 3-4 people. Brashawnee Johnson filled the Opelousas giving fridge and pantry on Wednesday evening with peanut butter, jelly, frozen pizzas, canned goods, diapers and baby wipes, then posted a video asking people to “only take what you need.” Within 30-40 minutes the shelves were stripped almost bare, just a few cans of chicken noodle soup, peas and oats remained. Johnson broke down in tears when she returned and saw other struggling families arrive to find nothing left. Despite the disappointment, Johnson says she still plans to donate again.
