@tricktser @Neutral_OC Science and logic explain the world as we know it today. If you rigidly stick to that there will never be new discoveries. I was not looking for a general explanation of religion, but the historical process that lead to the concept of popes and all the surrounding ritual.

Also, I’m just as likely to use an image I took of an interesting brutalist building from the 1950s or my cats. You seem to think that using an image equates to worshipping the subject.

@PatGrove2 @Neutral_OC I don't see the similarity. Saints are human beings exalted by God's grace. Polytheistic gods are deities, who are separate from mankind and operate by their own power.

@PatGrove2 @Neutral_OC The pope is the vicar (or deputy) of Jesus Christ on earth. He is the successor to St Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, and thus is regarded as an important figure. A papal blessing is something people avidly seek.
