@ghadfield hey Gillian, excuse random tweet. Would it be ok to email or DM you? I have a truly terrible public interest alignment idea it might interest you to critique, if you had time.

@carolecadwalla A cognitive hijack. Bit like when the military go after teens in schools and malls. There is a point re outdated skills, especially in coding/comp science but that's so liquid right now no institution could be current.

So last week, Palantir’s press office had Louis Mosley pushing his spin via my old newspaper, the Observer. This week, he’s using the Sun to urge students to skip university & go work for your favourite tech surveillance firm. 1/

🧠 Thinking is being reshaped by the media we use to express it. 🎙️ On the @FUTURESPodcast, recorded live at the @uniofwarwick, I sat down with @ProfSteveFuller to explore how new media is transforming the way knowledge is created, communicated, and contested. The themes in his new book 'Media and the Power of Knowledge' (@BloomsburyAcad). We discussed: ✍🏻 Why the future of thinking is shaped by short form - from aphorisms to tweets - designed to explain ideas, and provoke new ones. 📡 How social media is disciplining public intellectuals - forcing clarity, compression, and performance across multiple platforms. 🤖 How Artificial Intelligence is surfacing ‘undiscovered public knowledge’ - ideas we’ve already produced, but never fully understood. ⚡ And why true intellectual integrity may lie in the ability to change your mind publicly, in real time. In a world where everyone can publish and persuade - who gets to be heard, and what counts as knowledge? 📺 youtu.be/pwgzaVTM36Y

I vibed a flawed, anthropomorphic idea to see and manage the coming ocean of economic agents. Link in comments.

@kimmonismus good use = a control model to compare against neurological disease / dubious commercial use = which colour packaging makes us buy fast food / dark uses, optimizing interrogation techniques - tbh coming from meta feels like A/B testing for the soul

Meta is back: Meta just dropped TRIBE v2, a foundation model that predicts how your brain responds to sight, sound, and language. Trained on 500+ hours of fMRI data from 700+ people, it can predict a new person's brain activity without any retraining, and its predictions are actually more accurate than a real brain scan. Neuroscience just got a serious AI upgrade!

AI at Meta@AIatMeta

Today we're introducing TRIBE v2 (Trimodal Brain Encoder), a foundation model trained to predict how the human brain responds to almost any sight or sound. Building on our Algonauts 2025 award-winning architecture, TRIBE v2 draws on 500+ hours of fMRI recordings from 700+ people to create a digital twin of neural activity and enable zero-shot predictions for new subjects, languages, and tasks. Try the demo and learn more here: go.meta.me/tribe2

@carolecadwalla What is your worst fear for the direction he could take the Beeb? The v worst end state? I worry about selling the archives and iPlayer for AI training. Getting some dodgy 'Cultural Institute' in return a la France.

NEW: Will Google's AI hype man kill the BBC? I've written about Matt Brittin because the coverage of his time at Google is shockingly naive. The BBC's next DG made his career as a yes man at a rapacious AI monopoly that preys on news journalism in order to destroy it. 1/

@PatrickRiot @kimmonismus As complexity of LLM operation grows it becomes slower and slower, also requires more VRAM. This shrinks computation time & VRAM by 2-6x w/ no downside. Critically 6x is at long context. 60s reply now 10s, 30GB now 5GB. RAM shortage curbed, LLMs more practical for complex tasks.

Thats freaking awesome: Google Research has introduced TurboQuant, a compression algorithm (presenting at ICLR 2026) that shrinks the memory footprint of large language models by at least 6x, without any retraining or drop in accuracy. It works by converting data into a polar coordinate system that eliminates storage overhead, then applying a 1-bit error-correction step to clean up remaining distortion. In tests on Gemma and Mistral models, its 4-bit version delivered up to 8x faster processing on H100 GPUs while matching full-precision quality across tasks like question answering and code generation. The technique also outperformed existing methods in vector search, the technology behind modern semantic search engines.

Introducing TurboQuant: Our new compression algorithm that reduces LLM key-value cache memory by at least 6x and delivers up to 8x speedup, all with zero accuracy loss, redefining AI efficiency. Read the blog to learn how it achieves these results: goo.gle/4bsq2qI

Tough crowd! I’m just happy with any little drop of not slop. “every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger” 100% agree, it’s the superhero thing and it’s supercringe. My outlook on all this changed a bit after watching a recent Ben Affleck and Matt Damon pod. I realized I was hating on the player instead hating on the game - The creators of these movies often know and agree with you and etc but they can’t not respond to what the market wants, and only a few directors are allowed to take risks with capital of this magnitude. So basically you end up with low risk variations of the same formula that is (tragically) known to print money. I’m sure you’d enjoy something more technical hard sci-fi. There are dozens of us. My baseline for sci-fi is “Spiderman 10” so I’m overcome with joy to get anything even slightly better.

project hail mary was unfortunately a middling adaptation of a good book. the script has the unfortunate affect of “language model populism” - where every single line has to be some sort of punched up comedic zinger yet still unremarkable. visuals were uninspired and trite and more or less identical to other space movies. everything good about the film comes from the wonderful world scaffolding of the book and the hard science fiction of it all that lets you suspend disbelief on the alien rocky the movie doesn’t really try to get into the xenolinguistic stuff even at the depth the book tries (someone called it “arrival for idiots” which unfortunately hit ) the thing that elevated the book is the commitment to a hard science fiction engineeringporn fiction at a level nobody else is able to write. the direction of the movie doesn’t really convey the same feeling successfully, and you’re left with flat characters, an alien that is more human than several humans i know, and a marvel populism gosling and the german woman are great as actors, but this movie will not be remembered in a year. it is disappointing to see people do so little with a quarter billion, insane acting talent, and incredible source IP
