@merlino_games Plenty of games aren't 'fun' like Mario or fortnite or whatever but still do great. Games like Outlast are miserable slogs on a gameplay level but they survive on other things. They just have to be engaging.

Almost every BOTW sidequest is just collecting an item and bringing it to someone, by the time you're halfway through the game you just auto-complete most of them, it's more shallow than collecting cuccos in OOT let alone its good sidequests.

BotW's overworld is chock full of things, enough that most people won't bother to collect them all. Many haven't seen every landmark or found every secret.

I think a major factor in this type of trope falling by the wayside is that it made video production take longer.
Todd in the Shadows mentioned that Channel Awesome really pushed crossovers and storylines and that made making videos so much more complicated than necessary.

@Rev_ADB Hyrule Field isn't the whole game though. In OOT's overworld (as in, areas that aren't dungeons) you meet dozens of memorable characters and watch how they change between two time periods. It's extremely immersive compared to BOTW's flat, boring characters.

I love Ocarina of Time, but if you feel like its world is more alive than BotW/TotK… I think you’re seeing the game through rose-tinted glasses.
Better dungeons? Yes.
Better overworld? No chance.
