The 3D Gaussian Splatting paper has (rightfully!) stirred up a lot of attention and some friends asked me for a technical take on it, so here we go: TLDR: Fast, simple, outstanding level of detail, with some caveats (see below). 1/x
AK@_akhaliq

3D Gaussian Splatting for Real-Time Radiance Field Rendering paper page: huggingface.co/papers/2308.04… Radiance Field methods have recently revolutionized novel-view synthesis of scenes captured with multiple photos or videos. However, achieving high visual quality still requires neural networks that are costly to train and render, while recent faster methods inevitably trade off speed for quality. For unbounded and complete scenes (rather than isolated objects) and 1080p resolution rendering, no current method can achieve real-time display rates. We introduce three key elements that allow us to achieve state-of-the-art visual quality while maintaining competitive training times and importantly allow high-quality real-time (>= 30 fps) novel-view synthesis at 1080p resolution. First, starting from sparse points produced during camera calibration, we represent the scene with 3D Gaussians that preserve desirable properties of continuous volumetric radiance fields for scene optimization while avoiding unnecessary computation in empty space; Second, we perform interleaved optimization/density control of the 3D Gaussians, notably optimizing anisotropic covariance to achieve an accurate representation of the scene; Third, we develop a fast visibility-aware rendering algorithm that supports anisotropic splatting and both accelerates training and allows realtime rendering. We demonstrate state-of-the-art visual quality and real-time rendering on several established datasets.

@paulg Also these aren't weighted equally. You can ignore 1,3,4,6, eventually figure it out and still thrive. 2 and 5: chances are you'll never recover.

Someone asked what advice founders ignore. That they: 1. Should change their name. 2. Should launch fast. 3. Shouldn't treat fundraising as success. 4. Shouldn't assume they can raise because it's time to. 5. Should fire bad people quickly. 6. Shouldn't talk to acquirers.

The new BMW i3 seems extremely promising: - Up to 900km WLTP range - 800V system / 400kW charging - Up to +400km range in 10 minute charging - Side profile is similar to Polestar 2, which is nice I personally like the i3 looks better than Mercedes CLA. Tech seems great too.

These demos have been around since Johnny Lee hacked the Wii Remote in 2008. They look extremely cool on video but break in real-world usage because human stereo vision quickly identifies the screen as flat and overrides the depth-from-motion cues.

Hey, no crying in the twitter casino. You're calling other people's (incl. my) work fake, I'm telling you that's ludicrous. You rage baited, I showed up for it. To your point: a) whatever replaced object detection in your example is also part of a pipeline that might disappear in a few years, hence fake b) just b/c it gets replaced in 1 pipeline doesn't mean it's not still useful in 1000 others (that may or may not involve robots)

You're going too philosophical, I'm keeping it strictly practical For me a fake task is a module within a pipeline that will disappear in a few years, like object detection in robotics. I also did not come up with the term "fake task", Ross Girshick did And please avoid comments like "That logic is ludicrous"

VisMatch is on pypi! VisMatch is a wrapper for image matching models, like LightGlue, RoMa-v2, MASt3R, LoFTR, and 50+ more! It's literally as simple as: pip install vismatch vismatch-match --inputs img0 img1 --matcher choose_any To run image matching on any 2 images [1/4]

Have you considered that in your logic almost everything could be labeled a "fake task"? Let's take your example: Use VisMatch (fake) to localize a photo (fake) to guide a firefighter (fake) to put out a fire (fake) to save lives / the environment (real). Why bother with all this fake stuff? Why not just train a model to save the environment directly? There are a few valid end goals: happiness, pleasure, life, removal of pain. Literally everything else is building pipelines in service of those goals. Just because your transformer can now solve one narrow sub-task end-to-end doesn't make all the prior tools in that sub-task "fake". It's like saying screwdrivers are useless now that we can injection-mold car dashboard panels . That logic is ludicrous.

@Rafael_L_Spring Individual modules of a pipeline are fake tasks, because pipelines will become end-to-end If localization is the entire pipeline / end goal (e.g. localize this photo of a wildfire to guide firefighters) then localization itself is not a fake task It's quite simple

@gabriberton Ah, so localization isn't a fake task, but once you add mapping it becomes fake -- got it!

@Rafael_L_Spring SLAM is a fake task, but image matching is used for so much more! We actually developed VisMatch to localize photos taken by astronauts on the ISS, and this task will always require image matching

And where do you think that engine code came from? Am I the only one that's not trying to go from zero to product in the shortest time possible, but actually enjoys programming? Putting in the work and taking pride in being able to say "I built this"?
Sebastian Aaltonen@SebAaltonen

Now is the perfect time to write your own engine. The argument in the past was that you don't have time to write all the less important generic features. Now, the LLM will do that for you. You can focus on things that differentiate your product.
