@alexwickham @alex_callinicos Why are we even debating who knew what when? The key issue is that Starmer made an appallingly bad decision (which many knew and said at the time) and, when it was inevitably revealed how ill-judged it was, he threw a civil servant under the bus.

Olly Robbins acted with the calm integrity and intelligence that have defined his public service. His job was to judge whether #Mandelson’s risks could be mitigated, not tell the PM what he already knew. Starmer should retract his accusations and reinstate him.

One complication from Robbins’ evidence is he is setting out a completely different version of events on what happened with Mandelson’s vetting. He says UKSV did not fail Mandelson or even make a firm recommendation that he shouldn’t get clearance, only that they were leaning toward that view. Robbins argues was able to then put mitigations in place to resolve the issues raised by UKSV. He says therefore that the DV clearance was granted appropriately and that pressure from No10 did not impact the decision to approve clearance. And therefore that he didn’t need to raise it up the chain. Essentially he is downplaying the whole issue with Mandelson’s vetting. He also says in his view it would have been very difficult for him to block Mandelson because No10 had already publicly announced it and it would have damaged US relations.

Why has it taken months for us to find out that the PM wasn't legally allowed to know the results of Mandelson vetting? The journos do not ask the right questions or show us that they have any knowledge. #bbclaurak
