For everyone asking, I’m okay but really sad. I live on campus. For hours it has been incredible quiet frequently punctured by helicopters and sirens. My wife and kids are finally on their way home nearly 7 hours stuck in a library campus, sheltering in place. They are safe. Today I read an assignment from a student who lived through a school shooting in high school. I worry about her and all my students tonight, still huddled in classrooms and basements. My deepest sorrow for the families and loved ones of those we lost today. And my thoughts with all those who remain in the care of my amazing colleagues at the hospital. It’s all so hard to fathom until it happens to you and your community.

NOW: Possible Ebola exposure in Manhattan walk-in clinic reported. Preliminary reports say that two patients from Madagascar with possible Ebola symptoms arrived at the location, with three other patients possibly exposed to Ebola, if confirmed, while waiting in the lobby. My family and I went to see a show in the cultural district. $35 to park. My dad paid $40. These are city garages, not street lots. @gainey_ed , we choose to live in the city but this is just too much. I’ve no problem paying $10-20.

What I envisioned PIs do when I 1st got into science: read/write papers, discuss science w/ students, teach & prepare lectures What PIs actually do: edit biosafety/animal protocols, manage lab finances, solve HR problems, write/grade exams, write reference letters, review grants

My kids candy haul this year: tons of KitKats and Twix. Almost zero Reese’s, Snickers, Milky Way. Not many skittles either. Very unusual!! 🎃👻🍫
