U.S. got screwed with the red card in the game. Said f it. We ball. Outscored Bosnia despite being a man down. Balogun shook hands with the official anyway. Handled it like a total pro. Was told there were no appeals. Said f it. We ball. Bring on Belgium anyway. We’ll still win. We’re told today he can play. We say cool. Everyone else shows 0 class whatsoever. F it. We ball. See you tomorrow.

@RobertMSterling The US is less than 5% of the world’s population and produces like 60% of the medical innovation And Europe has like no military capacity When the planet’s healthcare and defense is subsidized by the greatest country to ever exist, it’s really not that hard to coast

@JGreenbergSez The other huge cultural difference between international soccer and American sports cultures is that corruption and interference is considered part of the sport in American sports cultures.

A huge cultural difference between international soccer and American sports cultures. Americans are used to our athletes saying they prefer to beat an opponent at full strength. International soccer culture - the same culture that produces players pretending to be injured - is fine whinging about a guy being suspended for something he didn’t even do to their team.

🚨 BREAKING: RBFA say they are "astonished" Flo Balogun can play against them and "investigating all potential options". "The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time). "FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. "However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup. "Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5: "If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed." "The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating member associations on 12 May 2026. "The same rule is reiterated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Coordination Meeting prior to each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026 workshop presentations. "In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options."

This completely misunderstands what a red card is. A red card isn't just a punishment for malicious intent—it's also a sanction for actions that endanger an opponent. Plenty of red cards are given for reckless challenges without any intent to injure. If "it was an accident" becomes the standard, you've just eliminated half the red cards in football. The referee saw the incident, applied the Laws of the Game, and FIFA overturned it after the fact. That's the real issue.
Mark Valorian@markvalorian

A fantastic decision by FIFA. Red cards are given out as a punishment to deter bad behavior; when the behavior is accidental, issuing a punishment is entirely performative. Balogun’s red card served no purpose. Its only role would have been to unjustly handicap one of the best storylines of the tournament in their biggest (and most visible) moment so far. A fantastic move by FIFA to recognize this and correct to allow the players to decide the outcome of the game. Well done.

Why am I seeing a load of idiots saying “right outcome, wrong process”? It was a blatant red card. Lots of low-IQ Americans clearly watching “soccer” for the first time during this World Cup.
Stu Holden@stuholden

So by suspending the “red card” they are admitting without admitting, that the decision was absolutely wrong (which we knew). But to do this 24 hours before the game is quite a thing and will create a stir in Belgium no doubt. Right outcome, wrong process. Crazy turn of events.

@MarioNawfal The question is not whether it is voluntary or not, but determining whether there is a dangerous fault from behind... And the answer is yes. Red card and suspension are both logical.

🚨 BREAKING: 🇺🇸🇧🇪 USA’s Balogun is free to play in the next World Cup match against Belgium after his red card suspension was lifted by FIFA. Trump: "Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!" Trump said it was a terrible decision, and now they're removing the red card, just as the host country's president said that on social media... Coincidence or corruption? 🚨 Folarin Balogun is eligible to play against Belgium. FIFA sources had insisted US Soccer had no appeal. Sources say US Soccer did not attempt one as a result. And Balogun had spoken on Monday here in Seattle about missing the game telling us, “I have to accept it…” Yet FIFA have decided to hand Balogun a suspended one-game ban, which is in their powers as per Article 27. The red card stands but Balogun is free to play. Cristiano Ronaldo also given a suspended ban before the tournament allowing him to play Portugal’s opening World Cup games.

This makes a mockery of the whole tournament. If the USMNT win, Belgium will have every right to feel cheated, meanwhile the USA’s victory - by their best ever generation of players - will forever be tainted by accusations of favouritism and corruption. It’s bad for everyone.

@aniiTweets @IDontCareva @TheFindalorian @mjeichinger Actually, the escalation is the key difference If Balogun had done it twice, then I would’ve totally understood if the refs determined that he didn’t have the necessary respect for the safety of other players Suspension on first offense is insane

@IDontCareva @TheFindalorian @mjeichinger But that’s not true? You can get a flagrant in the NBA with no intent and be suspended for a game, the only difference is that you need flagrant 2 + flagrant 1, instead of just a single one, but the system is exactly the same
