On February 17, THE DAM delivered a guest lecture to @UCLA undergraduate students, introducing digital assets and blockchain through the lens of art and cultural preservation. We explored the fundamentals of onchain provenance, digital ownership, and why this medium represents a pivotal shift in how culture is recorded and preserved for the long term. In License to Loiter, @bananakin invites us to wander through a warped slice of Florida street life. In a self-contained world with its own physics, logic, and rhythm, bananakin creates a symphonic hallucination rooted in Florida-core aesthetic with bizarre and incredible characters pulled straight from his imagination. Rendered in bananakin’s signature workflow, which begins in virtual reality using Quill and expands outward through 2D & 3D hybridization, License to Loiter shows the artist’s prowess through classic bananakin texture, energy, and movement. The result is a bustling crew of characters that is simultaneously alien, yet deeply familiar, almost like nostalgia for a time we’ve never actually experienced or known. The local insurance storefront becomes a stage for boogie-in’ & loiterin’. A character dons a baroque picture frame as a necklace, a nod to museum status and absurdity in the same gesture. Another bobs with glee, limbs akimbo, tongue lolling out in ecstatic abandon. Although there’s many characters loitering throughout the scene, there is no main character here – they are all together like a perfectly imperfect unit. Every detail becomes a protagonist when you hone in on it. The world bananakin creates is alive with rhythm, and the accompanying music is a sticky, head-nodding loop that refuses to fade from memory. In watching License to Loiter on repeat, one begins to understand bananakin’s true subject: the feeling of being in a moment. Not rushing through it, not aestheticizing it into preciousness, but letting it sprawl out and dance. Each replay reveals a new quirk, a character’s twitch, a flickering LED, a textural anomaly.
