For over four years, Merlin sat beside me for our early morning photo—my constant, seal-barking sidekick in the quiet hours before the world woke up. But today, the spot where he should be is filled with silence… and flowers. His collar rests nearby. His pawprint. His urn. The absence is loud. Still, I took the photo. Not out of habit, but out of love. Because even though Merlin isn’t physically next to me anymore, his presence is everywhere—in the routine, in the memories, in the ache, and in the love that hasn’t gone anywhere. This morning, there was no bark. No click of toenails. No warm body shadowing my steps. Just a stillness that feels too big to hold. But we’re trying. I don’t know what tomorrow’s photo will look like, or the one after that. But I do know that Merlin changed my life in ways I’m still discovering. And I’ll keep taking these pictures for now, not because he’s here—but because he was. And that will always be enough reason. Run free, my sweet boy. This one’s for you. 💔🐾
