Boating is an obscenely expensive hobby (or my case, a bad habit). I’m fortunate enough to be able to do it, but when I first started, I actually couldn’t afford it, but did it anyway. When I first started, there were many boaters who were just regular people (mailmen, factory, workers, etc.) who were able to do it because they worked hard and set their priorities correctly. And in fairness, there are still a fair number of regular people who are boaters, but mostly because they started in the days when it was more affordable, they do their own maintenance, and already own their boat slip and boat, so their cost of ownership is lower. But the barriers to entry for new boaters are now so high, that I don’t see many people entering into boating who aren’t already quite successful. That’s definitely a loss. You can always find a low-cost used boat if you look around, but good luck finding a place to put it. Waterfront property is impossible these days, and marinas are disappearing every year due to regulations and being squeezed out by waterfront condo developments. I’m trying to get my kids interested in it, but TBH, I’m not sure any of them could afford it as adults, even if I gifted them my boat😫. Oh well.

New Cessna 172's are ~$500k. Boats and Planes have become too expensive, and are the province of the rich. Used to be you could be middle class, and save, and get an old Piper Cub and fly it for $2k when your house was $10k. Now your house is 80% of the price of a new Skyhawk, not 500%.

@johnkonrad Sailboat market collapsed after Covid drove up Sailboat prices to the highest level in decades. You also have to realize sailboats are fiberglass and they never decay. There are tens of thousands from the 70s that still work great.
