It was actually tied with FF9 (at 94) as the highest rated Final Fantasy around launch. But it eventually settled at 92. Which puts it among some of the best games in the series. Puts it alongside the original #FF7 itself.
It’s objectively a great game.

The amount of freedom given to the player about the role they assume can be limited or extensive, but both still count as RPGs. Colloquially, words can evolve and take on new meanings, which is why RPGs have so many subgenres.

@Shokio_YT I really love E33. In fairness I don't think it is the best depiction of what an RPG is. Sure you have skills that you build up and you play as a character but there are only 2 real choices in the whole game. RPGs are about player choices making a difference in the game to me.

The first 2 hours, when you see Ichiban and the rest of the crew again, are pure gold, after that, when the "plot" kicks in, it continuously goes downhill.

Just imo some moments were super weak and personally made no sense for me.
I feel that most of the cast is there just to be a party member because story wise they have nothing to provide.

Yakuza has rejected the idea that blood makes you family which is why Masato will always be more of a brother to ichiban than Ebina

Kiryu - battle with Bryce and save Lani (mirroring the Haruka/Nishiki dynamic of saving a child from unwanted danger and violence from Y1)

And the ending scenes almost made me alt-f4 the game due to making absolutely no sense.
