Serious escalation on NATO's eastern flank.
Three russian MiG-31 fighters (heavy interceptors capable of being equipped with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles) violated Estonian airspace and approached the capital, Tallinn, to within approximately 5 nautical miles (approximately 9 km).
The aircraft circled there for approximately 12 minutes without a flight plan, transponder, or radio contact.
This was not a mere "overflight," but a provocative approach to a NATO member, which can be interpreted as a test of the Alliance's responsiveness.
NATO responded promptly: Italian F-35A stealth fighters were placed on alert from the Ämari base in Estonia and deployed to counter the attack. However, there was no exchange of fire—the russian jets withdrew as soon as the F-35s were within range.

Three russian MiG-31 fighter jets illegally entered Estonian airspace and remained there for a total of twelve minutes, according to the media. Protest? Condemnation? Harsh condemnation?

In my latest article for @IndiasWorld_mag, I outline "Nine Elements of India’s Emerging Strategy Against Terrorism" which I term "Deterrence by Exhaustion".
1. Assured conventional retaliation against sub-conventional attacks.
This strategy involves publicly declaring a conventional military response to Pakistan, unlike 2016, when actions were unannounced and only acknowledged afterwards, and then following through on these commitments. Through the new approach, which entails openly communicating its intentions to Pakistan and the international community, India aims to establish a well-publicised tripwire strategy, which may deter Pakistan from crossing certain red lines. India not only wants to take punitive action but also wants to be seen as doing so openly and visibly. Setting public redlines for the adversary to enhance deterrence is the objective here.

@USATODAY The Blackhawk flies right into the CRJ - and just after the tower asked if they had visual contact.
Either the pilot was confused - below and closing on the descending plane w/o realizing…
or it was deliberate.

#WATCH | Delhi: US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan says, "This is likely the last trip overseas that I will lead as NSA and I cannot think of a better way to end my tenure in the White House, visiting India on my final overseas trip to mark the advances that we have made together over the past four years. This is a shared and historic achievement...I have every reason to believe that within the next decade, we will see American and Indian firms working together to build the next generation of semiconductor technologies, American and Indian astronauts conducting cutting-edge research and space exploration together..."
