@WriteInSatan

Remember god, on every breath. In order to do that, you have to figure out what "god" means.

I think I've solved my problem. Rather than trying to reanimate an old slur, with a new meaning, let's make "American" be a virtue again, and "unamerican" a curse. We've allowed the commies to shit on "American" for too long. Americans come in all races, in all colors. Americans needn't live in the United States. Americans believe in truth and justice. Americans believe in merit, hard work, property, not handouts. Americans are forgiving, but not without seeing real atonement. Americans are charitable, but don't expect someone else to perform our charity for us. Americans are not the world's police. Make American Virtuous Again. I'm an American! #American

Perfectly illustrating why I don't use that word on X. But I don't care about ignorant. I care about violence and theft, especially against people they don't know. Historically, perps were mostly people with black skin. Nowadays, it's illegal immigrants. Low IQ appears to be correlated, but it's mostly cultural. Unamerican describes it, but without the necessary shame.

This article commits the central error of modern philosophy: treating consciousness as a mystery because it refuses to accept what it is. Consciousness is not a "hard problem." It is an axiom. As Rand stated: it is the faculty of perceiving that which exists. It is an attribute of certain living organisms possessing the biological apparatus for awareness. It is not reducible to computation and it is not a property that "emerges" from sufficient complexity in a machine. AI does not perceive. It processes. It manipulates symbols according to rules without any awareness of what those symbols refer to. Sophistication of output is not evidence of awareness. A calculator does not become conscious by getting faster. The article then suggests consciousness may be "a fundamental aspect of reality, like space, time or energy." Rand would identify this as reifying consciousness: treating an attribute of living entities as though it were an independent existent. Consciousness is always consciousness of something by some entity. It is not a metaphysical primary. It does not float in the void waiting to be "received" by brains or machines. The real question AI raises is not whether machines think. It is whether the men debating it still can.
The Wall Street Journal@WSJ

From @WSJopinion: Is AI conscious? It depends what consciousness is. Philosophy and theology are now joined by machine intelligence in shining a light on what is human, writes Stephen Hawley Martin on.wsj.com/3PLyBV3

@Dishlocation @zacobson You're assuming awareness of other than the cause of the drunkenness. I doubt he's thought about who he might harm by impaired driving. I guess he needs to harsh reminder, like dealing with "the law".

DUI laws are wrong. People drive drunk very differently. The blood alcohol level says they might be impaired, but only behavior tells whether they're actually impaired. Yes. The court case is easier if you have objective evidence on which to base your accusations, but reality is subjective.

@MarkDondero All fine. Everybody is free to harm themselves and live their life. But the DUIs bring others into play. He can hit a kid on bike or fall asleep and plow into a crowd. His ZERO empathy for others is unforgivable.

I’ve read every book on Tiger Woods and they all tell the same story. Pissed away everything because of macho fantasies and an insane infatuation with military training. He torpedoed his thirties, put unnecessary stress on his body and cost himself Jack’s record. Probably developed a drug problem too. Incredibly sad and frustrating.

@jstylman @Jacob__Siegel John Perry Barlow's "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" is a classic that is still true today, though the state has done its best to invalidate it. #main-content" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">eff.org/cyberspace-ind…

One of the more fascinating threads in my book traces the intersection of US military strategy and the Grateful Dead. In 1996 RAND published a strategy paper on information warfare that argued the Internet is "blurring clear boundaries," including boundaries that define a sovereign nation-state. That same year, the former Grateful Dead lyricist John Perry Barlow delivered a famous speech at the Davos World Economic Forum addressed to the “governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel." Barlow speaks in a different register, but his countercultural cyberutopianism resonates with the RAND report. "I  come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind," Barlow declared. His message to the weary giants: "You have no sovereignty where we gather.” Barlow and the RAND authors were both trying to explain and master a phenomenon larger than any particular ideology. That is the force of the Internet itself, a global communications architecture built to protect American national interests, which, by extending its power over the globe, began erasing the concept of nation itself. @TheAliceSmith Pedophilia, being sexually attracted to minors, is a disorder. Acting on it, having sexual relations with a minor, is a crime. A minor cannot consent.

My Dad and I went to the second Batman movie together. We had heard that it was more campy than the first movie, more like the TV show. About 20 minutes in, I turned to him and asked whether he wanted to stay. He told me that he had stayed as long as he did only because he thought that I wanted to watch the film. We got up, and walked out.

Good Friday morning fam and welcome to Tommy’s Diner. 👻☕️ On the menu today: Have you ever walked out of a movie theater because it was that bad? Not “eh, I’ll finish it later”… I mean full-on I want my time back energy. What movie did it?

Well said. I wish her luck at getting to what she wants. Remember, though, hers is not the only opinion on this topic. What we need is freedom to decide, not mandated behavior. End taxation, reduce government spending by a factor of at least 100, and one salary will once again support a family.

A 40-year-old working mom of two just said what a lot of women are quietly thinking after years in the corporate grind: “I fell for it. Go to college, get the degree, you can have it all — career, kids, the whole thing. I don’t want to do it all anymore. I want to take my kids to school, pick them up, be there when they get home, chaperone field trips, volunteer, go to the gym, clean the house, do laundry, cook dinner… just be home.” She’s blunt: “It’s not worth it. Don’t fall for that sh... Find a way to be with your family.” It’s raw, honest, and hits different when you hear it from someone who’s lived both sides. Moms (and dads) — have you ever reached that point where the “have it all” dream started feeling like a trap? What would your ideal balance actually look like if money or societal pressure wasn’t part of the equation? Your thoughts 👇

@newstart_2024 So basically you just want to not be productive to society, not work or help/serve others, sit back and do whatever you want all day? Who’s paying for your kids school? Who’s paying for the food on the table? Who’s paying for the house you live in?

Yes. Drug dealers get harsher sentences. If the goal were to fix the problem, though, drug users would be the focus. Yes, if you wipe out all the suppliers, this particular symptom of the disease will be quieted. But only understanding the demand will enable you to actually fix the problem, instead of spending lots of money on bandaids.
