I am torn between this, which feels horrible every time I use it; and turning it off and manually cropping in Paint, which I know, intellectually, takes longer.

Related to the recent "94ms to open a Run dialog" discussion: Win11 added a snipping utility to the PrintSc key. Today I measured it: it takes 1 second to start (and then another ~200ms of animation).

@_flashman_harry @cmuratori Apparently I got lied to by the AI result when I checked yesterday. Typical SATA drive reads at 500MB/s with a latency < 0.5ms. Which does not even slightly invalidate my point.

Just want to make sure I'm reading this right: Microsoft rewrote the run dialog with performance "top-of-mind", and the best they could manage to do when putting up a single text box was 10fps?

@TheGingerBill FWIW, I've done very tiny, incomplete versions of this in the past by just implementing parts of #mangling" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">itanium-cxx-abi.github.io/cxx-abi/abi.ht… (IIRC this is just GCC and Clang)

Anyone know of a C++ name MANGLER library out there? I am not looking for a demangler. I want something where you can give it function prototype and it returns a mangled name for the given ABI/compiler toolchain.

@Rodman1_r2 @rfleury Dude, calculator takes over a second on a brand new, high-end workstation. I used to be able to hit the calc key on my keyboard and start typing numbers. Now I have to wait. And the experience on Mac is just as bad.

@rfleury I mean WordPad and Notepad still open instantly. Word opens fast, and that's what you use for a serious project.

Turning on your computer should be instant. Logging in should be instant. Starting any program should be instant. Opening any file or folder should be instant.

@missile_guide Hi :) The short version is that I wasn't responsible for Stick Soldiers. Some 20 years ago, someone else made 1 and 2 (so long ago I forget their name). I negotiated with them to make SS3, and failed. I was very inexperienced. I started doing Stick Ninjas, but moved on to RCRU.

I'm tired of seeing lazy "software performance doesn't matter" excuses on forums and social media, so I devoted an entire video to the mountains of evidence debunking that ridiculous idea: computerenhance.com/p/performance-…

It is interesting to consider that N can grow unbounded, and so it would be wise to keep it in check. But, except for the most BASIC of spaghetti code, the complexity of ‘things’ is typically self-limiting.
