What is an #altcite, you ask? Altcites are alternative citations, the other voices, the non-canonical ideas. Altcites are anti-zeitgeist, off-trend but on-point, heterodox not orthodox. @altcite will be launching at the @RGS_IBG from Tuesday August 28th 2018. #RGSIBG18 Join us!

How do you #altcite? It's not exact, but something like: 1. Attend conference or event 2. Engage with some great ideas 3. Think of perspectives or voices you'd also like to see cited in the session 4. Tweet the details with the #altcite hashtag @altcite 5. We'll add to the list!

If you're at the #aag2019 #aagdc you might find #altcite useful. We launched @rgsibg 2018 to keep track of citations that were absent and overlooked. During a session just tweet @altcite with suggested missing citations. If you can help monitor the account this week, please DM.

@jilltxt @ProfGillian Exactly! An altcite can be in response to a total void, not just a reaction to selective citational practices but also those that aren't selective at all - talking about cyberspace without giving any references? Think about Boym on lazy Internet patriots in the 90s #altcite

Another #altcite on #algorithmicwar. It isn’t just in academia that good research Is routinely overlooked or miscredited.@guardian and other news media could consider wider citational practices too.

@jilltxt @ProfGillian You can altcite without citations too!! We are gathering up quite a strong collection of references - and AoIR seems like there are some fruitful discussions going on (and so many excellent First Nations and BME/PoC people and women in attendance!) ?

And we’d add Hope Nicholson and Cherie Dimaline, and the wonderful anthology, Walking In The Clouds edited by Grace Dillon to that list :-)

Final day of #RGSIBG18 and our trial run of #altcite is nearly over! Keep the cites coming, and head to "Capturing the landscape of the conference" for Session 4 (16:50 - 18:30) in the Main Building Large Shandon Lecture Theatre to see a run down of how it has all worked out.

@altcite Great - thanks! This was something @AyaMusmar actually asked me about when we discussed this after @O_P_E_R_A brought this to our attention!! I should have properly cited her, actually. I look forward to doing this as well as #citeblackwomen :)

@altcite This is cool - so the alternative citations refer to citing alternative, non-canonical scholars which is great; do you also see this as including people “writing” on different platforms (ex: tweets, blogs, sharing indigenous oral knowledges, etc) to open up idea of “scholar”?
