He will always have a place in the world of basketball and is positioned to do well in other ventures. The issue with Jaden Ivey is this: if what we’re seeing is mental health–related, there’s a pattern where the context of a breakdown can end up overriding a person’s broader identity. It’s easier for people to internalize and define you by what you say during a manic or ideological moment when you appear to be “standing for something” as opposed to something more clearly detached, like Marbury’s incident. On top of that, Ivey isn’t close to the level of player Marbury was globally, and it’s easier to repair your image when you’ve already given audiences a high-level body of work. I mean, people still play “I Believe I Can Fly.” Ivey may have already made his bed, because even if this is driven by delusions of grandeur or psychosis, he’s likely expressing ideas he genuinely believes on some level. So when the episode fades, if it is an episode, he may still be too entrenched in those beliefs to walk things back and regain control of his career. I’ve watched some of the videos. I don’t agree with him, but not in a “this is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard” way. It’s more that I don’t align with zealotry, and he comes across as an unwise zealot. It feels like someone who’s down on his luck, choosing a hill to die on that has nothing to do with him. It’s irrational. Then again, maybe he could pivot this into an influencer lane for people who enjoy being pandered to. Honestly, he might end up more successful there than as a basketball player. Anyway, the point is this: it doesn’t have to be over for Jaden Ivey…but it likely is. He just doesn’t have the production to offset the level of distraction this creates.
