Robert E. Lee was objectively a brilliant and daring general. He was a complicated figure for obvious reasons.
Had the spirit of 1865 had been driven by the urge to shame, punish, and mock Lee and other confederate troops and generals, the Union likely would not have lasted.
Grant, Lincoln, and the troops themselves largely understood this.
So many people today misunderstand that and as such, can't appreciate Trump's statement here.

There is a very real and unbridgeable divide in this country. I have experienced it first hand.
I have hob nobbed with the most Libbed out Libs at happy hours and ball rooms in DC, and I have attended get togethers around bonfires in deep red rural Virginia.
One group wants to be left alone, and one group, in a very real sense not an abstract one, wants the other eliminated.
I’m pro doing whatever we can to secure our safety for as long as we have to.

Today’s Supreme Court decision effectively guts a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act, freeing state legislatures to gerrymander legislative districts to systematically dilute and weaken the voting power of racial minorities - so long as they do it under the guise of “partisanship” rather than explicit “racial bias.” And it serves as just one more example of how a majority of the current Court seems intent on abandoning its vital role in ensuring equal participation in our democracy and protecting the rights of minority groups against majority overreach.
The good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level.

Whoever wrote this for Trump has a deep understanding of American liberty.
It didn’t magically appear in 1776.
It was developed in our shared language over a millennium. The revolutionaries saw themselves as Englishmen, asserting their ancient liberties.
