This was also my exact thought when I read this cover. I am so entirely disgusted by this man in his 30s who chose to use his opportunity for an Ivy League graduate education to instead rally up a bunch of people to harass and yell at Jewish teenagers. A man in his mid-30s spent the past two years largely harassing kids straight out of high school, and now this adult has the audacity to act as though he is an aggrieved victim of chance and not a purposeful decision-maker who did everything in his power to actively forge the path that brought him to this point. He is facing the consequences of his actions. Yarden Bibas didn't have a chance to make different decisions. He did not face the consequence of his actions. He was actually the victim of happenstance, of the cruelty of others, of the sheer chance of living in one of the places broken into and unconscionably violated by evil, sadistic, religious and ethnic supremacist, hate-driven men. There is something so repulsive about reading the language of passive victimhood coming from a grown man in his 30s in a foreign country who has had every opportunity to make his own choices for the past two years, who knew his choices were understood by a not-insignificant portion of the citizens of his guest country and their political leaders to be a form of harassment that breached some of the most treasured national laws - our civil rights laws - and who chose to continue to lead hate campaigns of disparate impact against minority teenagers even as his campaigns were under investigation by multiple layers of government and even his own educational institution. It is a gross form of appropriation of actual victims and survivors to appropriate the language of hardship and powerlessness as a response to facing the consequences of his own substantial and known actions. But I suppose that is perfectly aligned with the modus operandi of Palestinianism, which is to appropriate the true suffering and hardships of Jews and use the language of Jewish suffering as descriptors of the consequences they face for their own aggressive and violent actions. And somehow, these maladjusted Westerners keep eating it up, blinded by an inverted late 19th/early 20th century morality that they envision themselves as fighting against, but are actually recreating by enacting its flipside: instead of "might makes right," they believe that "strong makes wrong." They continue the orientalism, white saviorism, and noble savage racism of their predecessors; they continue to understand the world through prisms of blood and soil nationalism and *volk* studies, this time channeled through "social sciences" rather than "racial sciences." These Westerners who can hear, and choose to headline, a 30-something year old man from a foreign country act like a victim of chance as opposed to an active, willful agent privileged with the unencumbered freedom to make his own choices, when there are so many others in this world whose choices were violently stripped from them and whose lives have been overturned by unconscionable cruelty with little attention or justice, is not only vile, but belies that they have abandoned their own ability to think and to judge, replacing judgement with ideology. They replaced their own judgement with an ideology of neo-Victorian social Darwinism that still considers outcomes not as matters of ethics, nor individual choices, nor character, but as outcomes to be weighed as part of a total "system" of axioms and formulas that displace individual humanity. These neo-Victorians shower their sympathies and power on a man based not on merit nor virtue, but on his position in a system they are trying to tinker to meet their expectations of how things should be "ideally." They then ignore, deny, trivialize, or justify the suffering of those more moral with far greater hardships, since acknowledging or elevating those wrongs lay bare the incompleteness of a system they claim is totalizing.
