Balance rarely comes from increasing efficiency. It usually involves reducing responsibilities. The more priorities we have, the harder they are to juggle. It's better to do a few things well than be overwhelmed by many. A key to avoiding burnout is deciding what doesn't matter.

@bfry04 @n_valikodath These are definitely good suggestions to approaches. It’s true at my hospital these residents are extremely busy so finding teaching time can be difficult. It has felt demoralizing where any discussion is just scut world but these I will try these suggestions

The best thing I’ve ever done as a resident thus far is let a medical student go home early.

@BuffaloSingh19 @n_valikodath Or can ask for learning in return :“I would love to learn more about X patient/disease process. Maybe once I fax those records we could chat more about X?” It’s hard to say no when you’re being graded, but can at least get something out of it

@BuffaloSingh19 @n_valikodath If you find you’re consistently getting scut dumped on you, it can be helpful to re-iterate your own personal learning goals & see if you can redirect to something more educational later, eg “I’m happy to do that but maybe then I could ___.”

One of my most hated sayings of all time: “Boys will be boys.” Have we not realized that this is just a crappy & lazy excuse for unacceptable behavior? Reminds me of 1 of my favorite sayings of all time: “Excuses are like assholes - everyone has one and they all stink.”
