The Sameer Project@sameerproject
In the displacement camps of Gaza, water and sanitation conditions have reached an alarming level. More than six families are often forced to share a single bathroom, many of which are broken, unsanitary, and unusable. With no running water to flush waste or maintain basic hygiene, and no access to cleaning materials, the situation has become increasingly unbearable. The resulting odors and accumulation of waste are contributing to an environment where disease spreads rapidly and daily life is marked by constant exposure to health risks. Khadija Camp in Gaza City, like many other displacement sites, reflects this harsh reality. Internally displaced families are living with an almost complete absence of water and sewage systems, creating conditions that threaten widespread illness and potential epidemics. The lack of sanitation infrastructure and hygiene supplies has left residents struggling under severe public health pressures.
The Sameer Project’s Medical Committee is actively assessing camps across Gaza to identify the root causes behind the spread of disease. In most cases, findings consistently point to critical failures in water and sanitation systems. These assessments are then forwarded to our Experts Committee to design and implement practical interventions.
As part of our response, we have been sourcing materials and constructing new sanitation facilities within camps, connecting them to existing main water pipelines where possible, in an effort to restore dignity and reduce health risks for displaced families. The cost of each bathroom with a toilet seat amounts to $1200-$1300, and of course many are needed in each camp.
