@KEdge23 I’m sure lots of voters would have like the opportunity to vote Tory Kevin. What a shame your leader is so terrified of Nigel she’s too chicken to stand

@DPJHodges The Police just wanted to say he’s white, it’s not terror or political, and stop asking questions. If he’s charged it will be silence until the trial.

Police again very clear. No suggestion Anne Widdecombe's death terror related. Or that it is politically motivated. And that speculation on motive is unhelpful to their investigation.

I wonder if people like Andrew would say the same to the 53% of Conservative voters who believe in achieving net zero by 2050 or sooner. If so, the Conservative Party has not yet hit rock bottom kcl.ac.uk/news/uks-sense…
Andrew Stuttaford@AStuttaford

The phrase the "wrong side of history" has, wrote Robert Conquest, a "Marxist twang." So it does. Would-be MPs who advocate net zero 2050, an authoritarian, futile and economically suicidal exercise in central planning should join the Labour or the Lib Dems.

@mattholly @patrickkmaguire @theipaper So you can’t change the rules for anyone already in the country? Ok, you can’t put my taxes up because I’m already here, Do you see how silly that sounds.

@patrickkmaguire @theipaper You can’t change the ILR rules for people already in the country but you can change it for people who come here from now on, the rest of it is the opposite of what reform are saying that is making them popular, that is really dumb

Scoop: Nearly 80 Labour MPs have signed a private letter urging Andy Burnham to retreat on Shabana Mahmood’s controversial immigration reforms,The i Paper has been told. In a sign of the deep divisions that remain within the Parliamentary Labour Party, MPs are urging the incoming PM to change course on Mahmood’s immigration and asylum policies. The letter is understood to have been handed to the prime minister-in-waiting, setting up a potential headache for him before he has even entered No 10, and raising questions over the future of the Home Secretary. Another brilliant exclusive by Richard Vaughan, w/@kitty_donaldson and me

@DPJHodges With the help of you and others, Count Binface is very quickly becoming the establishment candidate. Much to his annoyance I suspect.

The basic strategy Reform should have adopted was to say "There are dozens of joke candidates in this race. Count Binface is one, and we wish him well, He at least has the courage to stand, unlike the mainstream parties". Instead, they've set the attack machine on him. Madness.

Right now Clacton gambit looks like a mistake for Farage. Though cross-party over egging of Bin Face risks backfiring & turning the election back into Farage win when he likely wins comfortably (not ideal parallel for lots of reasons but this feels v Hartlepool Scargill 2001)

The American right has developed a morbid fascination with Britain over the past two years, particularly after Elon Musk began tweeting about grooming gangs. Some European influencers have found it lucrative to present Britain and parts of the continent as having 'fallen', posting videos of crimes by immigrants and appearing on American podcast networks as weary ambassadors from broken countries to warn: 'It could happen here.' Yesterday evening the Joe Rogan Experience podcast released a two-hour interview with Rupert Lowe, leader of the Restore party. Was Lowe there merely to create content – or is Restore a serious political party? Some of his statements suggest it's the former rather than the latter. ✍️ John O’Neill Article | spectator.com/article/fact-c…

Interesting hypothetical. Makerfield was obviously a key moment in the "Reform are in decline" narrative. But the trends were clear anyway. If Keir Starmer had been able to somehow find a way to hang on for a couple more weeks, could Farage's implosion actually have saved him.

So one thing I genuinely can't get my head round. What do Reform think a "win" in Clacton actually looks like? They're obviously worried, which is why they're pulling out of Manchester. But worried about what? Falling below what benchmark?

This Clacton Circus is an absolute gift for Andy Burnham. All scrutiny has suddenly dissipated. Gets extra space to put his team and 100 day strategy together. Then stands on the steps of No.10 looking Prime Ministerial, whilst Nigel Farage is wandering around arguing with a bin.

This gives today's events fresh context. Farage knew this story was dropping today. And wanted to deflect by it. Also tried to spike the Guardian by passing to another paper. Even more serious questions for Reform to answer. Especially because the phrase "money laundering" keeps popping up.

Nigel Farage is a grifter. He always has been and he's continuing to grift. He knew he was heading towards a byelection anyway so has pulled the trigger early. The people Vs the establishment?! Reform are literally part of the establishment.

I’ve always believed that people deserve a Labour choice at an election, but I’m glad we’re not taking part in Farage’s Clacton clown show. He’s subject to the same rules as every other MP - he just whinges when he’s held to those same standards.
