Two NOAs came through today from NIH. One as MPI from NIMHD and another as Co-I from NIAAA. I was patiently waiting, but the news of a possible govt shutdown was making me nervous. I will be soon posting info for funded PhD positions with skills in Data Sc, Digital Carto, health!

I'm excited to see talks by some excellent scholars (and hang out with them) and geek out about what's possible with IPUMS data.

@kairyssdal I am in Universal City right now. Didn’t actually feel the earthquake in hotel lobby. It’s steadily raining here but little wind thus far.

@paulgp @jschwabish Maybe too basic but line graph for city comparison and graduated circles for specific cities. I don’t really love graduated circles but this may work.

By benefit I mean a few million dollars for a new building or a new labor classrooms allows more students to enter the university. As crass as it sounds, if someone shows up with 20M and says take my lazy son with a 2.5GPA and keep him occupied for 4 years and give him some degree in some made up field, I think that’s a choice between taking the kid in like some glorified daycare but also open up space to take in 50 more new students. Or saying no and no 50 more spaces. Of course I’m just showing how much donations can be transactional. And whether this is a net benefit or not is open to debate.

34 percent of Harvard students are white. 43 percent of those students are either legacies, children of faculty, kin of donors or a recruited athlete. 75 percent of them would not have gotten in if not for special status (National Bureau of Economic Research). But when in doubt, blame the Black people!
