San Diego FC is an insanely fun watch. Dynamic, brash, naive in the best way, and fearless in the moment. Their goalkeeper Ferree and both outside backs, Bombino and Verhoeven, are 19 years old. One of their center backs, Manu Duah, is 20. Vazquez, who has scored a brace so far, is also 19. The kids ball. Anders Dreyer may be the best player in North America outside of Messi, and they’re up 3-1 while being a man down since the 12th minute against back to back Liga MX champions. Mikey Varas and Tyler Heaps have built something special. Fun to watch. #SDFC x.com/TheChampions/s…

I desperately need to know if Mike ad-libbed all that or if he’s using the prompter. Either way, it’s one of the all-time great closes to a sporting event I’ve ever seen. It resonated deeply with the audience. If he did that off the top of his head, crown him now. Wow.

San Francisco can be a great Super Bowl host city. This year was a logistical nightmare and pain in the ass, because different areas of the Bay Area wanted a piece of the pie and everything was so far apart. The reason why everybody loves New Orleans as a Super Bowl host city is because everything is within close proximity. San Francisco and New Orleans have everything you want in a Super Bowl host city: great restaurants and food, music and entertainment, nightlife and attractions. San Francisco needs to showcase San Francisco more. It’s one of America’s greatest cities. Sorry, but nobody cares about San Jose or Santa Clara. Super Bowl opening night: hold it at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Opening night kicks off Super Bowl week. It’s supposed to be a big, exciting event. This year, it was at the San Jose Convention Center. A small venue, with just a couple hundred fans, and there was no juice or energy. Radio row at the Moscone Center worked well. It was a little crowded, but radio row always is. The fan experience at the Moscone Center worked as well. Have the teams stay in San Francisco. Media having to travel 90 minutes to team availability makes no sense. It’s brutal and takes three hours away from creating content. Make San Francisco the hub. ESPN had a set by the Ferry Building. That was cool. Showcase that, show off the Golden Gate Bridge. Everything felt a little disjointed, thrown together last minute and just didn’t make much sense. Little bit of a blown opportunity. The game being in Santa Clara is fine. That’s a whole different event and it ends the week. Had a great time, just think it could be better and make more sense for everyone involved.

@NFL_2_SD Talking to media during Super Bowl XXXII, every one of them said the only two cities that should ever host the SB should be San Diego and New Orleans. Obviously times have changed, but now the draft, combine, World Cup, and other events would be great here and we miss all. Sad.

The only thing that would make me happier than the Padres winning a World Series would be Roger Goodell admitting he made a mistake losing the San Diego market. I feel somewhat vindicated Jerry Jones said something along those lines in August 2017, but I want to hear the commish.

@dilanesper Was just in San Diego briefly and it was notably way more sports-y than LA or SF, lots of Padres stuff everywhere, lots of sports on TVs. Seems like a mistake to have 2 semi-redundant NFL franchises in LA instead of leaving one there.

@AlbertBreer Will San Diego ever get another NFL team? We were considered one of the best Super Bowl cities and the narrative Spanos fabricated about us not supporting the team is BS. He couldn’t get the city to build him a stadium. With a new owner, new stadium, could it happen? @NFL_2_SD

@LATimesfarmer Very true. It was great to see Phillip out there. Been a long time since we could root for an NFL team. Heartbreaking what was done to our city. We were loyal fans and a great Super Bowl City, but in the end it was all about $ for Spanos.

There have got to be some fans in San Diego who are cheering an NFL game for the first time in years.

@NFL_2_SD @hochalicious @jimsteeg You can’t put a price on the visibility that a team brings to your city internationally let alone the civic pride that unites the community like nothing else does in positive times. I’m glad fans have so quickly coalesced around SDFC to help fill the void.

@NFL_2_SD @hochalicious @jimsteeg True, but when the city can’t fix potholes and runs a massive budget deficit, messaging any public subsidy for a sports team in this environment would be impossible. We missed making the case on what an economic asset the Chargers were and what a SB, drafts, mean to the economy.

@NFL_2_SD @hochalicious Ask @jimsteeg. He can confirm or deny this narrative. I believe the only chance, if ever, is in Chula Vista or North County, outside City of SD. Countywide vote with billionaire owner fronting 90% of stadium costs. San Diego is a great host city, but now SB rotation everywhere.

@hochalicious Why is this narrative a thing? Spanos had to surrender the rights to the market when he left San Diego. Bears-Packers was televised over the Rams a few weeks ago. 2 owners alone can’t block it anyways.
