While the Women’s Football Council has chosen to conduct its own historical review, Football Australia has not commissioned, funded, nor will its outcomes have any bearing on the Board’s decision. ❤️SHE MATTERS: EMMA BATES!❤️ Emma Bates. This is her name - and a little story about her life. But first, I must start with her death. Emma was killed in Cobram, Victoria, on Tuesday. Her neighbor - a man known to the justice system for his ongoing use of violence - has been charged with a raft of offences against Emma including assault. He has not been charged with murder. It's not clear if the charges will be upgraded. At the age of 49, Emma this week became the 31st Australian woman killed in 2024 and the 11th lost to violence in April. Emma had only known her alleged killer a very short time. Rumour-mongers say they were lovers but her family disputes this fervently, saying she did not like him. Emma was known in her community for her kindness. She had some serious health challenges including diabetes and needed mobility aids to navigate the world. Regardless, she always found time to make life better for others. Often bringing food to people in need, and giving gifts to those worse off than herself. She rescued - and adored - cats and was a much-loved aunt to 17 nieces and nephews. 'They (her nephews and nieces) were her pride and joy and she would spend hours talking about them to everyone," Emma's sister told a media outlet. "She had many of their faces tattooed to her leg so she could carry them with her always." Emma was an awesome human, she mattered to her family, she mattered to her community, she matters to me. ❤️SHE MATTERS: TARA MARIE MORRISON!❤️ Chances are you haven't heard of this woman, her death over-shadowed by the murders of five women and a man at Bondi Junction on the weekend. She is the other Australian woman killed last week. Please, take the time to get to know her. This is 38-year-old mum Tara Marie Morrison. Sometime between Thursday and Friday, Tara was murdered at a home in Broadwater, WA. A man and woman known to her are charged with murder. Tara is the 28th Australian woman killed this year and the eighth woman killed since April 1. Tara had an 11-year-old son who is now being cared for by her loved ones. “To everyone, the woman who tragically passed away was not just a 38-year-old woman, she was Tara Morrison, a loving mother who leaves behind an 11-year-old son who was at his grandmother’s house during the incident,” a relative of Tara said. And she is right. Tara was so much more than the faceless 38-year-old woman mentioned in passing by media over the weekend. She was a dedicated and awesome mum. She was a much-loved sister and daughter. She was a committed and passionate member of her community. She was a woman hellbent on living her best possible life. Like those killed at Bondi Junction, Tara deserved to live a long and peaceful life without the specter of violence. She mattered. Please remember that.
