STORY | NEET-UG re-test: Govt places curbs on Telegram messaging app till June 22 The government on June 16 temporarily restricted access to the Telegram messaging app ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, with the National Testing Agency saying the measure was aimed at tackling cheating rackets and misinformation. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), acting on recommendations made by the National Testing Agency (NTA), has issued a direction under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, restricting access to the Telegram platform in India for a defined and limited period ending June 22, 2026, covering the day of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination and its immediate aftermath. A separate direction requires Telegram to disable in India the message-editing feature for already-posted messages till June 30, addressing the specific structural feature through which the platform has been used to fabricate after-the-event "paper leak" evidence in respect of national examinations, the NTA said in a statement. #WATCH | Delhi | National Testing Agency DG Abhishek Singh says, "The commitment of the government is to conduct a safe secure examination. As far as use of IAF and all is there is because of the functional requirement because this time after the exam was cancelled, we are conducting this examination in 37 days. Normally preparation for this exam requires five to six months. In order to compress the time taken, Ministry of Defense and Indian Air Force, they offered their services. This has has helped us in compressing that 15 to 20 days of movement to around three to four days. Every institution of government is helping NTA in the interest of 22 lakh students to be able to ensure we are able to do the exam in a timely manner." "As far as the action on Telegram is concerned, it may appear to be a sledgehammer, but when it is the interest of the students, when the interest of lives of the students, when it is the interest of career of about 22 lakh young minds, every step will be taken. The strong arm of the law will come down when it is required. We are not there to just issue warnings and threats, but to also act when it is needed in the interest of our young students."
