Of course, I don’t approve of this negativity toward men. It’s repulsive But the effect of having a gender skew toward female might be positive. Is there a reason to believe we wouldn’t all be happier with, say, 55% women and 45% men?
staysaasy@staysaasy

I hear people say this and it is so sad man. Smart people say stuff like “oh I’d never want a boy. I have to teach them to not be a violent predator.” This framing is fundamentally antagonistic to half the population and a huge problem in society.

@kelly_o_edwards I’m with you. As a Catholic matchmaker, I know many high-quality young women. I also know lots of young men who, for whatever reason, are reluctant to get into the dating market and get on with it. It mystifies me. When I was young, I couldn’t wait to get married.

There are lots of great ladies looking for a Catholic husband. And at the same time, Catholic young men who "want to marry a Catholic girl" yet seem to be prevented by various insecurities or mysterious other obstacles. Genuinely asking as a pastor, how do we fix this??

I am attending my great niece's First Holy Communion tomorrow. I am a Pope Pius V and Counsel of Trent Catholic. I have not entered a NO Church in over 12 years. Please say a prayer for the First Communion of all these children. And, if you will, please say a prayer for me.

@wahlstedt007 Truthfully, we don’t tend to think about it that much. We’re just busy living our lives and taking care of the people around us.

In five categories, women are cheating more, yet the framing only focuses on the two categories where men cheat more. This is a misleading and selectively framed presentation of the data.
Girls Chase 🏃‍♀️💨@GirlsChase

The least faithful men are the extremes: super successful OR unemployed. The most faithful men have upper-middle class jobs. The least faithful women are those with the least prestigious work. The most faithful women are housewives.

@literally_chad What matters here (at least from a conjugal perspective) is that he's interested in her. If so, the marriage can be consummated, the babies will arrive in due time, and she might find that she rather likes being married to a man. Nature finds a way.

I don't necessarily recommend marriage in your situation. If you want a lavender marriage with a gay man, you're doing something beyond my understanding but maybe that's the best move.

@JosiahHawthorne You're forgetting this is measured against the population as a whole. Three times as many citizens are making fewer babies. This doesn't end well for us.

Thank you, @EricRSammons, for getting the Benedict Option right. Almost a decade since I published the book, and some people STILL wrongly think I call for Christians to head for the hills. (Good column too -- of course I agree with you.) crisismagazine.com/opinion/our-di…

@centerdigitaled Absolutely correct. And by now we have at least one generation of employers who went through online classes themselves, and know how non-serious and unchallenging they can be. So they are much less likely to take them seriously in a résumé from a potential employee.

As I enter my 30th year of being very happily married to a woman way out of my league, I have a message to young men: there is a secret to a successful relationship, it's being best friends with another couple where the man is a useless buffoon

Western civilization is the greatest to ever exist. We built the Parthenon. Then we built Notre-Dame, Chartres, and the Hagia Sophia. We painted the Sistine Chapel, the School of Athens, and Las Meninas. We sculpted David, the Pietà, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace. We wrote The Iliad, The Divine Comedy, and Hamlet. We gave the world Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Newton, and Goethe. We discovered the laws of physics, invented calculus, and mapped the human genome. We built Athens, Rome, Paris, and Vienna. We crossed oceans, reached the moon, and split the atom. Every civilization has its achievements. But none built more, thought deeper, or reached further.

Available now. I was honored to write the foreword for the 25th anniversary edition of Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass by Theodore Dalrymple. As you can probably tell from the title, the book is about life at the bottom of society. Not just in terms of money but in terms of behavior, values, and daily choices. Drawing on his many years working as a doctor with prison inmates and patients in low-income neighborhoods, Theodore Dalrymple describes how violence, addiction, broken families, and despair are sustained not only by material hardship but by ideas that excuse bad behavior and reject personal responsibility. Dalrymple challenges a comforting story. Many people believe poverty is mainly about a lack of resources or unfair systems. This book argues that culture and norms matter just as much, sometimes more. When society stops expecting discipline, self-control, and accountability, the people who most need those guardrails suffer the most. I read the original version of Life at the Bottom about a decade ago when I was in college. One of the most important books I’ve ever read. Writing this foreword for the 25th anniversary edition feels like coming full circle. First living the world Dalrymple describes, then discovering his work in college, and now helping to bring it to new readers. Strongly recommended. It is available today. "What are your intentions with my daughter" used to be the gating question for serious dating. The honest answer filters most candidates out, which is exactly the point. Modern dating removed the question and removed the filter. Then we're surprised at the output.

@limitlessleila Having eight sons, I’ve done this a few times. I appreciate responses like “I love how kind he is”, “I admire his artistic ability“. “I love how good he is with babies and children“ I want to see that she’s paying attention.

@limitlessleila So then my question is more about why they are dating my son. What do they know about him? Have they noticed something in particular about him that I know about him as well? Are they interested in him as a person, or in him as a category? (ie just looking for a guy.)
