Well this sure shivered me timbers: I typed "write a lesson plan for using the pythagorean theorem to find the length of a hypotenuse" into ChatGPT. It's not coming for my job just yet, but still. #mtbos#iteachmath
Hey #chesspunks I need tips to help me get better at reading chess books. The notations and commentary always makes me feel like I’m reading Greek.
Do I just need to have a board or what?
@ChessNetwork While this is a very pretty combination, it's a little silly, as there is no sequence in which black would not have captured the knight on the previous move.
I'm still surprised that in Chicago, the 3rd largest city in America, there's no #chess club that offers classical games, has a dedicated location, etc.
Fellow #chesspunks, how many of you have access to a chess club relatively close to your home?
@MathTechCoach I rely pretty heavily on TPoS. Not for the text, but for the resources. Specifically, I align my standards to the chapters. That way, students know where to find resources when I assess/reassess. (I do SBG.) The “learning targets” and review questions serve as a review sheet.
Dear chess friends,
It's definitely not the best time to announce, but it was urgent.
On March 2, we're launching the redesigned website.
If you have time to take a look and give feedback, please put + in the comments or PM me.
I'll give you the link.
Thanks in advance! 🙏
@natesolon Wow. A joke about statutory rape. Horrific. I’m glad you shared this. The chess world has always struggled with giving girls/women a seat at the table. I’m not surprised by this joke. I’m surprised it was condoned by the organizers.
This could be the kind of moment you remember for a long time. It might be the moment you think about when you decide to quit chess.
So for the men who want to make chess more welcoming to women, which I still believe is most of us, it's important to speak up about this.
There was an unfortunate incident involving sexism in chess at USATE that I want to address.
I didn't think I had anything to add to the conversation, but the more I think about it the more it bothers me, and it's important to stand up and be counted on this stuff, so...

Random musing of the week.... What's a small change that you think could be made in math education / classroom teaching / etc that could have a large impact?
We often talk about reform, but we all know that it's really hard to turn a ship around. However, little changes add up
@CmonMattTHINK A hypothesis: Part of the appeal is that there is only one word per day. If they could binge play it, the obsession would last only a couple of days.
I always assumed that W_rdle was for Olds.
The fact that my STUDENTS are obsessed with it tells me that this is something to which we educators must pay close attention.
Wordle 196 4/6
Thanks to my math teacher friends @CmonMattTHINK and @bobloch for turning me onto this. Here’s to a less productive 2022!

@GiusePag@NealBruceBC@Bennyficial1 Chess Steps is highly recommended. I haven’t come across anything else that is comprehensive and of the same quality. I have taught from the first three levels and am part of a small study group that is going through Chess Steps 6.
