CHAGOS SURRENDER UPDATE Lots of people in different parties did their bit to halt this degrading proposal. It would have gone through had there not been skilful and determined resistance by Conservative peers. Chagossians are back in the archipelago thanks to the intrepid genius of Reformโ€™s Adam Holloway. Many of us, including Nigel Farage, Priti Patel and others, flew to the US to explain the danger to our allies. It is disappointing to see some Tories and some Reformers bickering over who should take credit. The truth is that the two parties worked together, alongside many others, above all the Chagossians themselves. This ainโ€™t over. Labour is looking for a way to revive the deal, even if that means waiting for the Democrats to win some future election. We need to show the same willingness to work together on resettlement that we did on halting the Bill.

If the Chagos surrender really is dead, that's fantastic. But Starmer shouldn't have needed to be told that paying billions of pounds to hand over our territory was a bad idea. These constant u-turns are embarrassing for our country. The British people deserve better.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

EXCLUSIVE Sir Keir Starmer has been forced to drop legislation which would cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a further deterioration of relations with Donald Trump The Times has been told that a bill underpinning the controversial deal will not be included in the King's Speech next month after the US president branded it an "act of great stupidity" and withdrew his support The government stands by the deal and will attempt to persuade Trump to change his mind but has acknowledged that it cannot proceed without his backing Ministers are "deeply frustrated" with Trump, who initially supported the deal after extensive discussions between intelligence agencies but changed his mind during a dispute with Nato over plans to seize Greenland The government believes that it puts the future of Diego Garcia, the UK-US base in the islands which has been used during the Iran war, at risk It is concerned that Mauritius will mount a legal challenge granting it access to the waters around Diego Garcia, making it harder for the base to host nuclear submarines and patrol surrounding waters The deal was highly contentious. It would have seen Britain hand over the islands to Mauritius before immediately entering into a 99-year lease for Diego Garcia. The government claimed it would cost ยฃ3.5billion, although the Tories disputed this and said it would cost ยฃ35billion his over its lifetime. thetimes.com/uk/politics/arโ€ฆ

Wonderful news! The Chagos Surrender Bill is dead! The Conservatives campaigned around the clock to stop the Chagos surrender. This was clearly a bad deal for Britain, costing tens of billions, giving away sovereign territory and emboldening our enemies. Starmer staked his reputation on this terrible and flawed piece of legislation time and time again. Astonishing that he was so willing to give it away and tried so hard to do so.

Breaking News๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง: "Starmer's $35 billion giveaway of the Chagos Islands has CRASHED and BURNED. Thanks to a 1966 Act reprisal, the US Government always had the right to veto this bill and they've done it". Tory MP Mark Francois shares the breaking news that Starmer and his deep state panjandrum lawyer rat Lord Hermer, have been cut off at the knees in their attempts to hand over a UK/US military base to the Mauritians and CCP Government. Nice result for @realDonaldTrump and those within both @reformparty_uk and the @Conservatives that put the kibosh on such a traitorous act.

Labour finally concedes defeat over their execrable Chagos Islands deal in the absence of support from Donald Trump. It has been on its last legs since February and now wonโ€™t be included in the Kingโ€™s Speech next month. Keir Starmerโ€™s woeful management of the special relationship has cost him one of his flagship policies; terrible news for Starmer, good news for the UK. The Government must now resist caving to pressure should Mauritius launch a legal appeal, given there is no valid reason to cede our sovereign territory to them.

The Chagos Islands deal is dead. Keir Starmerโ€™s assurances to President Trump clearly havenโ€™t landed. As the reasons for his decision to give away our sovereign territory, and with it Diego Garcia, unravel, the Government must pull this bill. There is no justification to do it.

If Keir Starmerโ€™s Chagos surrender now finds its rightful place - on the ash heap of history - it will be because Conservatives led the fight against it from day one. That it took so long is another damning indictment of a prime minister, who fought to hand over British sovereign territory and pay ยฃ35 billion to use a crucial military base which was already ours. Unlike Labour, we will always put our country first. We are the only party who can be trusted to stand up for Britainโ€™s interests abroad.
