@icehockeystick Yep. Schafer complained about this when Cornell had to play Minnesota at Mariucci in the '05 regional (after the shift to "neutral" sites), but it was simply bc there were no other/limited bids, so Mariucci got it & Gophers were top seed, so.... too bad?
English

Likely because schools aren’t dying to bid and there aren’t enough bids. Hosting regionals are a BEAR

@icehockeystick No clue why the NCAA keeps going back
English

@jamespatrick101 @chnews That still has nothing to do with trying to make games accessible to more fans

@chnews How is one team hosting another "easier access" for fans? Fans of just the higher seed? Because it in no way helps fans of teams 9-16.
English

@FanaticColorado @NewsGoat69 @BizNasty2point0 Take it up with the NPI. And since they were NOT the #1 seed in the region, it's irrelevant to the conversation.
English

@Johnubacon Add a few grand if you're from out of town (most are) for flights, food, hotel, etc... It's no wonder regionals are ghost towns.
Money aside, if nothing else, on some level doesn't the NCAA owe it to these kids to make this a worthwhile experience?
I feel bad for these kids.
English

And thus thousands of empty seats in Albany.
Yes, everyone knows the NCAA hockey sites suck, including where they put which teams, but what's still striking is how much it sucks, right down to empty arenas, and that they do nothing about it.

@brhoner @Johnubacon I live 15-20 min from the Albany arena and didn’t go. Why? They were $60/tix for the final plus another $20-30 to park. At $100, I have a better view from my couch.
English

@BizNasty2point0 Denver was basically home! It was packed and exciting!!

@Kitkat_1216 Here is a list of a TON of High School rinks in Minnesota.

The interface is a little funky, but once you click on any of the rinks/arenas, this button on the left will give you a gallery view, then you can pick the interior/rink views.

@312sportsguy @CanaduhJ @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets What? You don’t want to drop a few grand on tickets, flights, food & a hotel room in lovely Albany in March?
😆
English

@jamespatrick101 @CanaduhJ @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets Plus, given the choice between a weekend in Chicago and one in Albany, NY... yeah.
English

@CanaduhJ @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets They play NCAA regionals at "neutral" sites.
Often far from either college campus.
This regional is in Albany, which is a nice little 9 hour drive from Ann Arbor. Even farther from UMD.
English

@MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets Wait what’s the problem?
Why such small attendance?
English

@FreshGrade @Buccigross at this point, I'm starting to wonder if he has dirt on every GM in the NHL
English

@AlexMicheletti WTF? Dumb. What's with all the Cassidy disrespect? All he did was bring a cup to Vegas. Boston did him dirty too. Don't get it.
English

@GaryStofcheck @Daking_12 @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets 🎯 Bingo. And same…I love hockey (all levels) and college baseball (esp CWS) is great. But ESPN is just filling their air. If chess was on and got better ratings, they’d bump it for that too.
English

@Daking_12 @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets College hockey fans and college baseball fans arguing about who is the tallest midget. I’m a huge fan of both, & ESPN doesn’t really care about either of these sports.
English

@Hopinarndthwrld @spittinchiclets @TheREA @HCrossMHockey @GopherHockey 😭🤫😂 best of luck in the frozen 4
English

@jamespatrick101 @spittinchiclets My personal favorite was 2006 West Regional 😉
An absolute electric atmosphere at the @TheREA where @HCrossMHockey beat @GopherHockey in OT
The on campus regionals, especially with extremely heated rivals are what makes college hockey playoffs amazing.
English

@gniknayrb @Rob_W75 @sezenack lol, ok. it's *maybe* a 4 hr drive from fargo with the best traveling fan base in college hockey.
talk about a losing argument.
English

@NUHockeyBlog 4-5,000 on campus >>>>>>> 6,000 @ 15,000 arena
and it's not even close.
English

44 out of the 63 home arenas do not have a capacity over 5000 and the attendance at Albany was higher than the capacity of Yost, by the way.
Stephen Zenack@sezenack
Attendance at the regionals Worcester 4,018 Sioux Falls 5,114 Loveland 4,217 Albany 6,584 Average 4983
English

@MikeGrinnell_ And if you watched the PC & QU game, you know sure as shit that ~4,892 of those 5,000 in Sioux Falls only showed up for the UND late game. (And of those few hundred that did, 75% were still NoDak fans.)
English

Can assure you there wasnt 7k people in Albany

@venividiveech @MikeGrinnell_ @GameNotesBud not to mention tix sold but not used from biz, schools and resellers. so tix sold...sure. butts in seats, hell nah
English

@MikeGrinnell_ @GameNotesBud These numbers get inflated and misconstrued because they count both sessions and present it as though that many were at each game.
English

@mdesisto543 @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets Also, at risk of stating the obvious... if you had 3,000 at Schneider Arena, that would *absolutely* be more actual people than what watched PC in South Dakota yesterday.
English

@mdesisto543 @MikeGrinnell_ @spittinchiclets Nah
Watch QU/PC game? Hundreds of people.
(UND fans prob 75% of those)
Attendance reported at 5,114. Riiiight.
(Tix sold, maybe. Not butts in seats.)
But ok, say you DO get 5K for PC @ AMP.
Not great for 15K seat arena.
But pack Schneider Arena w/3,000 & it would be amazing.
English

Biggest game of these kids lives and they are playing in empty arenas in the middle of no where. Change is coming. Chiclets is on it!!
Spittin' Chiclets@spittinchiclets
Enough is enough. It’s time to end neutral site regional games.
