There are no easy answers. Some of the problems we’re seeing have played out over decades, and reversing them is going to take time as well. But we are seeing successful efforts by young leaders around this country and around the world to reinvigorate pluralist values. And what those leaders are discovering is that, when they listen to people and recognize their multiple identities and seek out common experiences and common values – they’re not just strengthening democratic habits. They’re also building stronger organizations and delivering better results for their members. That’s the power of pluralism. That’s how we’ll reduce the cynicism that is so prevalent in our politics right now. And ultimately, that’s how we’ll work together to solve the greatest challenges of our time.

At this year’s @ObamaFoundation Democracy Forum, I spoke about pluralism – the idea that in a democracy, we all have to find a way to live alongside individuals and groups who are different from us. So we commit to a system of rules that helps us peacefully resolve our disputes and try to cultivate habits that encourage us to not only tolerate each other but also join in collective action.

We’re near the end. Let’s talk BREAD & PASTRIES. Poppadoms (or pappad)? You’re sorted for fresh poppadom dough! They’re nicer freshly cooked anyways, and the raw pastry can be used as a makeshift pastry case too, think poppadom tartlets. Now for all your favourite pastries - it’s gonna be a samosa - they’re frozen and ready to go for parties! Next door you’ll find parathas - my favourite Indian carb. You can actually put these straight into a pan, frozen, and fry them to a buttery crisp. It’s flaky, like roti meets a croissant. I always make mine from scratch, and eat them with butter and jam or condensed milk! Now to make these from scratch you’d need flour, which will explain the difference between a roti and a chapati. A roti can be made out of any white, wheat flour. The minute you add a fraction, or even all chapati flour, it’s now a chapati. What’s chapati flour (labelled as ‘chapati atta’)? Chapati flour is a wholegrain wheat flour, that’s all. It has a deeper, wheaten flavour. However, it’s more finely ground than most wholewheat flour you’ll find at the regular supermarket, which makes it easier to roll and stretch your chapatis.
