Jan Venegoor of Hesselink. There’s no name in football that’ll beat it for me. I’ve heard many names over the years and some are special to my ears. Some of them are: Shabani Nonda Signwonder Chimbambo Gaizka Mendieta Gilles Yapi Yapo Rasak Pimpong Lomana Tresor Lualua Benjani Mwaruwari Siyabonga Nomvethe Hidetoshi Nakata Ono Shinji Fabio Quagliarella And I saw one recently, one of Roberto de Zerbi’s assistants, his name is: Marcattilio Marcattilii.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage me an expert on US history, foreign policy, etc.? No. It's a silly thing I *trained myself* to do. Then I learned about the world and what knowledge truly is. Which means understanding how the 1st 7 lines of the Iliad sets the table for the book is more important than repeating.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Again, you're not making a point. I have never said anything is "easy". I said that just because he or anyone can do that particular trick doesn't mean he understands more about Greek (or anything else). I equated it to little 8-y.o. me memorizing the presidents. Did that make...

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage the lines. They're sounds. You just have to remember them in the right order. Perhaps Boris is brilliant; but maybe he doesn't really know what he's saying. Both are true at this point. Memorizing sounds in a particular order means so very, very little.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage But memorizing isn't learning. That's the point. I memorized the 7 lines of the Iliad and then forgot. The "rage" aspect, which is not just superficial, is what stuck with me. The dual verb as well. As I've shown, you don't need to understand anything about Greek to recite...

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage For example, when I was in grade school I memorized the list of US presidents in chronological order. I can't remember the list as easily now. I could probably piece it together, but now I am filling in with knowledge I have learned over the past 40 years...

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Listen, I am more than willing to have interesting conversations with people, but you 1) are impressed by memory tricks and 2) use "words in quotes" that I didn't say. Also, I said I can sing La Marseillaise in French. According to you, that should be impressive.

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Yes both of those things are impressive feats. I’m also assuming you can’t do either of those? It’s crazy how all of these things do insanely easy and “anyone” can do them, yet you can’t do a single one of them.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Also, I never said it was "easy" (I don't use words like that, things can be easy or hard for people for different reasons). I said all Greek students have to do it. We were expected to be able to recite it. That's it. That was also 25 years ago. You're being thick for no reason.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage I hope you still know the point you are trying to prove, but I am lost. You haven't answered any question I have asked. I am willing to concede that Boris could be a brilliant Greek scholar, smarter than any professor I ever had. BUT this recitation means nothing in that regard.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage And my contention was always that all Greek students learn the lines. If they choose to retain that information, great. If they don't, that doesn't mean they are not as smart or don't understand the language. It's a parlor trick, as someone else stated.

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage I said yesterday (in a reply to someone else) that I can rattle off the first three lines pretty easily. I studied it 25 years ago and I have chosen to focus on other things. Now, answer my question: do you honestly think it's a sign of great intelligence to memorize something?

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage It's only common to people who have *studied ancient Greek*. That's a smaller and smaller number as time passes. The important part is understanding that "μηνιν" is the first word of the Iliad and sets the scene for what will happen 22 books later, when Achilles' "rage"
