@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Listen, knowing that Boris Johnson can recite the first 7 lines of the Iliad does not change my opinion of his intellect. At this point I can only sincerely hope you're trolling (poorly).
English

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage But you forgot…… again memorizing something and then forgetting it isn’t nearly as impressive as actually remembering it.
English

still amazed how many people seem to mistake an unremarkable parlour trick as a sign of great intellect

It’s not every day that one gets to listen to a former British Prime Minister recite from memory the opening passages of The Iliad in Ancient Greek, with no notes, in response to a random question from an undergraduate—and all while wearing what appear to be Thomas The Tank Engine socks. But today was one such day. My thanks to my good friend Brad LaMorgese for the opportunity to see the colorful and comic Boris Johnson speak tonight at the University of Dallas.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage me an expert on US history, foreign policy, etc.? No. It's a silly thing I *trained myself* to do. Then I learned about the world and what knowledge truly is. Which means understanding how the 1st 7 lines of the Iliad sets the table for the book is more important than repeating.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Again, you're not making a point. I have never said anything is "easy". I said that just because he or anyone can do that particular trick doesn't mean he understands more about Greek (or anything else). I equated it to little 8-y.o. me memorizing the presidents. Did that make...
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage the lines. They're sounds. You just have to remember them in the right order. Perhaps Boris is brilliant; but maybe he doesn't really know what he's saying. Both are true at this point. Memorizing sounds in a particular order means so very, very little.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage But memorizing isn't learning. That's the point. I memorized the 7 lines of the Iliad and then forgot. The "rage" aspect, which is not just superficial, is what stuck with me. The dual verb as well. As I've shown, you don't need to understand anything about Greek to recite...
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Instead of 1. Washington, 2. Adams, etc. I can fill in gaps by knowing that Andrew Johnson succeeded Lincoln and the reasons why it is important. THAT is more important than memorizing a list like it's the lunch menu at a Thai restaurant.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage For example, when I was in grade school I memorized the list of US presidents in chronological order. I can't remember the list as easily now. I could probably piece it together, but now I am filling in with knowledge I have learned over the past 40 years...
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Jesus, it's something I learned as a child. Dream bigger.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Listen, I am more than willing to have interesting conversations with people, but you 1) are impressed by memory tricks and 2) use "words in quotes" that I didn't say. Also, I said I can sing La Marseillaise in French. According to you, that should be impressive.
English

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Yes both of those things are impressive feats. I’m also assuming you can’t do either of those? It’s crazy how all of these things do insanely easy and “anyone” can do them, yet you can’t do a single one of them.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Also, I never said it was "easy" (I don't use words like that, things can be easy or hard for people for different reasons). I said all Greek students have to do it. We were expected to be able to recite it. That's it. That was also 25 years ago. You're being thick for no reason.
English

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Nobody ever said this made him the smartest man in the world. It is impressive though. As shown by the fact YOU can’t do this while simultaneously saying it’s so easy.
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage I hope you still know the point you are trying to prove, but I am lost. You haven't answered any question I have asked. I am willing to concede that Boris could be a brilliant Greek scholar, smarter than any professor I ever had. BUT this recitation means nothing in that regard.
English

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage If it’s so easy you should remember it all. According to you it’s the easiest thing in the world but apparently you’re too dumb?
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage And my contention was always that all Greek students learn the lines. If they choose to retain that information, great. If they don't, that doesn't mean they are not as smart or don't understand the language. It's a parlor trick, as someone else stated.
English

@justabicho @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage So you can’t remember it all? That’s weird according to you it’s super easy. You must be really really dumb then right?
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage I said yesterday (in a reply to someone else) that I can rattle off the first three lines pretty easily. I studied it 25 years ago and I have chosen to focus on other things. Now, answer my question: do you honestly think it's a sign of great intelligence to memorize something?
English

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage Ends the story. Good luck translating that into English! Also, it's fun because "διαστήτηνis" the dual form of the verb (instead of singular or plural) and it's not common to see it!
Română

@ZachBla77915097 @Jim_Sonweed @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage It's only common to people who have *studied ancient Greek*. That's a smaller and smaller number as time passes. The important part is understanding that "μηνιν" is the first word of the Iliad and sets the scene for what will happen 22 books later, when Achilles' "rage"
English

@ZachBla77915097 @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage There are people who can tell you the value of pi up to the 2000th digit or something silly. Are they smarter than the people who calculate how to get to the moon?
English

@justabicho @PurensPhD @amaldorai @kevverage I think memorizing the opening passage in a different language is actually decently impressive. You can’t do it.
