@Stxxr01 The real shocker is the amount of British people “doing” British accents on American TV. Happened all the time in the 90s where, presumably, they turned up with their regular accent and it was not seen as British enough.

In the spirit of science and in honor of England's match against Croatia today, here is my 2nd attempt at a proper cheese and onion cob: Kerrygold butter, a slab of Tillamook 6-year reserve cheddar, some big-ass slices of white onion, and Miracle Whip for Salad Cream. Delicious!

@London_W4 It’s strange that dropping the ‘h’ in French-sounding words is high culture and ‘correct’ but is frowned upon when done in a ‘London/South England’ way. If there was a poster for ‘ride an horse today’, people would be judgemental.

@PhilWhomfield A while ago, the wife and I went to a pub that was temporarily trying to be a bit bougie. I ordered the pasta in white wine sauce, her the triple cooked chips. When I tried dipping the chips in the sauce, I had to admit it was a far superior carb.

the problem with all this discourse is that this trend you identify with young urban progressive americans has and is happening with young urban progressives around the world and that is like 75% of who engages with this discourse.

Americans (esp. young urban progressives) are very proud of developing a more sophisticated food culture since the 1980s, and are shocked that the Brits still see us as culinary provincials, viewing themselves as more worldly. This is the core of the “taco” pronunciation debate

I have no interest in eating a giant raw onion but British sandwiches are legit when I studied abroad for a summer in Oxford Oxford we would eat these ham butter and cucumber sandwiches on the lawn while drinking pimms cups it was heaven

@himbopotamuss Interestingly, two of the best summers of my life were spent in America. You wouldn’t know that different countries so could be so chummy just by looking at twitter. Sadly (in reference to your flag), I’ve spent precious little time in Germany.

@kenny_macleod @himbopotamuss That’s super charming 😁 If you’re ever that way again, there are some kayak tours you do in areas like Buxton that are super quiet (basically because the river is too thin for any motorised boat) Also a good area for otter spotting, but I’ve never been that lucky.

But they still could've chosen any of the others as well.

@mattrum91 @jess_ann_pin Has "retard" actually been used against all people in wheelchairs? Hard to imagine someone calling Stephen Hawking that. I agree that language changes. That was also my point. That "retard" is now a slur and the others aren't is arbitrary. It's not predicted by the term's use.

@mindrelic @emmatpnlovebot It’s said that Americans put sugar in everything (“even milk” you’ll hear a lot). The reality is normally that the US is a corn-based country, rather than wheat. Although, wonder bread does indeed have sugar in it.

@emmatpnlovebot To be fair, when I have visited the US, American cheese was the default on every burger. Sometimes you’d get Swiss or Monterey Jack which is a bit better. All cheddar was mild. Only saw flavourful cheese at specialty shops.
