Before he necked pints of wine and saved clubs from the drop, Sam Allardyce was a hard-as-nails defender. As one manager put it: "If he wasn't playing with the ball he was playing with your balls." But on a lads holiday to Spain, Big Sam got a nasty taste of his own medicine... After a gruelling 88/89 season with third tier Preston, Allardyce and his teammates need a holiday. Like a pack of horny sixth formers, they head for the Costa del Sol. According to his pals, Sam rocks up to the beach “in a thong”, drenched in tanning oil like the world’s largest rotisserie chicken. But he soon tires of sunbathing, and has an idea... Sam slaps his thighs and challenges his teammates to a sumo wrestling contest. One by one, he sends them sprawling across the beach. Finally there is only one opponent left to face: Ronnie Hildersley. A slight, 5ft 4in midfielder from Kirkcaldy. About the size of one of Big Sam’s legs. He has absolutely no chance. But they say the bigger you are, the harder you fall. Hildersley topples him with a precision judo trip, and Allardyce leaves a dent in the beach the size of the Chicxulub Crater. As a forfeit, Big Sam is held down in the sand and buried up to his neck by his teammates, a serious task in itself. Worse still, the team’s boombox is placed by his ear, turned up to max volume and fed nothing but punk rock. Allardyce’s teammates then fuck off to the pool and leave him to bake without food or water. Hours later, as the light fades and the tide sweeps in, the squad return to find Sam drenched in sweat, mumbling and delirious. They quickly free Big Sam from his sandy tomb. Neon pink in the face and consumed by rage, a starving Sam storms back to the hotel restaurant. He orders 11 fried eggs, and eats them in a single sitting. We’ll give you one guess what he washed it all down with.
