It's almost time for Hispanic Heritage Month! From September 15th to October 15th, we celebrate with pride Latino culture and all that we contribute to this country. Today I'll be kicking off my "Spotlight Series", once again shining a light on talented execs (that happen to be Latino) across a variety of sectors, including the technology, entertainment, advertising, media and marketing (TEAMM) industries. As companies plan to host panels and activate their Latino employee resource groups, here are a few tips: • Tip #1: Understand the diversity in being "Latino" - Whether US-born or foreign-born, whether English-language dominant, Spanish-language dominant, or fully bilingual and bicultural, whether white, brown or black and everything in between, we are all Latino "de corazón". • Tip #2: Pick Latinx speakers that can add value to your audience - Latinos are the growth driver for every company, every industry and the U.S. economy at large. And Latinos drive not just business but culture! So have Latinx speakers come to share their authentic story, glean consumer insights, and discuss industry and cultural trends (it's way more than just Bad Bunny). • Tip #3: Don't Get Caught Up in Labels - Latinos, Latinas, Hispanics, Latinx, etc. - there are so many labels I've lost track frankly. Just ask the speaker what they prefer to use. Don't worry about offending anyone, if you don't know just ask. It's more important that you have Latinos coming to speak. For the record, I prefer "Latino" or "Latina", as you would speak it in Spanish. • Tip #4: Pay Hispanic Heritage History Month Speakers - Just like any guest speaker, pay the Latinos that you invite - and please pay them fairly, not the discounted "multicultural" rate. • Tip #5: Hire Latinx speakers all year long - yes, it's true...we're not just Latino during Hispanic Heritage Month...so keep inviting Latinos to speak, to teach, and to inspire. Here are 4 tips for success from Nely Galan a self-made media mogul: 1. “Don’t buy shoes, buy buildings." A quote Nely uses to advise women when they feel down — going on a shopping spree is short-term thinking. 2. Befriend fear. “I say that fear and failure are my two best friends," said Nely. "I’m afraid every day of my life. When I’m afraid, I know it’s guiding me to what I must do." Nely advises not to let fear stop you from moving forward in your career. Instead, take it as a sign that you're where you're meant to me. If the fear is extremely paralyzing, try zeroing in on what it is you're afraid of. Then create a list of all the potential scenarios and all the tools you have to deal with them if they did manifest. 3. Find strength in your failure resume being longer than your success resume. Nely explains how her "failure resume" is longer than her success resume. She went to emphasize that there’s no shame in this.
