@Altimor This assumes they are hiring primarily from the pool who would be looking for work normally.

Another thing that can move the needle here: having a K8S expert on the team. That brings the catalyzing energy down. It's _very_ important that they actually be very familiar with K8S cluster bring-up in similar situations and not just someone who hacks on the K8S API.

it's fun talking to ex-FAANGers when they're still fresh to normie SWE life. The things that surprise them remind me of talking to my toddlers/kindergartener, in a good way. It's really neat learning about the devtools/workflows in FAANGs too, especially at Google and Meta.

The tech stack of most startups: - Frontend: React (because everyone uses React) - Backend: Whatever the CTO knew from his last job - Database: Postgres (or Mongo if someone watched a YouTube tutorial) - Auth: Copied from a blog post - Payments: Stripe (obviously) - Deployment: "It works on my machine" - Documentation: LOL - Tests: "We'll add those later" Valued at $10 million.

I've been in tech in the PacNW since the early 90s, working for big companies, and many start ups. There will never be the equivalent of one of these companies founded, or based in Washington. (founded, maybe. But they won't stay.) If you're a newbie to the Seattle area, these companies are legends and it's time to get a clue on the history. Under the new taxation, the founders of these companies would have never successfully grown and collectively hired hundreds of thousands: Attachmate WRQ Microsoft Amazon Avalara Concur (SAP) McCaw Cellular (Now AT&T wireless) Expedia T-Mobile Aldus (acquired by Adobe) Immunex ZymoGenetics Real Networks F5 REI Eddie Bauer Costco Zillow Starbucks Expediters International Alaska Airlines Paccar Airborne Express UPS (yes, UPS was founded in Seattle) Nordstrom Eagle Hardware (acquired by Lowes) Blue Origin Why would a founder of any of these companies start the equivalent of any of these legends if they'd have to give up 10% to the state when they're still in an early stage? And save me the sanctimonious "paying my fair share" virtue signaling. Grow up. This is one of the most aggressive tax schemes in the country. And our once vibrant economy will be relegated to satellite offices and incubator stage companies. Nice work, Washington!

@ivanburazin Surprising. Senior people should be identifying and leading work, even in big tech.

We once hired a super senior and decorated person from Microsoft. Turned out to be a complete mismatch and we had to let them go. Expected all the work to come inbound. Whatever came in, they'd get done; if not, they did nothing. In big tech/corporates, work gets pushed to you by the market or management. In small, early-stage startups, you gotta hunt yourself. Nobody's feeding you.

@dexhorthy AI makes it a lot easier to onboard in unfamiliar codebases. I think this will happen but it will be multi-day instead of multi-week outages.

Here’s what’s gonna happen: - you replace your code review with feedback loops (sentry, datadog, support tickets, etc) - you stop reading the code - software factory fixes everything - one day something breaks at 3am, agent can’t fix it - nobody’s read the code in 3 months - you have 3 weeks of downtime trying to re-onboard and fix it - you lose significant % of your contracts and users - your company is now dead
dex@dexhorthy

@gregpr07 this may surprise you that thus is coming from me but I think we’re in for a 1-3 year period where stuff might break at 3am and if you’re relying on loops to fix it and nobody understands what’s under the hood, you’re looking at an existential threat to your company
