@jimiuorio Ok, maybe I’m wrong, maybe you don’t know a lot of anti-immigration people who spread hate, lies, and propaganda about immigrants, so you can’t ask people you know why they do that.

Also, the Chicago fire didn’t start because “Mrs O’Leary’s cow kicked over a lantern. That was hateful anti Irish propaganda. There was never a shred of proof..much more likely was a meteor shower that started several fires in the Midwest..the fire on the same day in Peshtigo Wisconsin was just as devastating as Chicago..

@jimiuorio I didn’t write about media propaganda. Or about illegal immigration. Or about your household. I wrote that I think you know many people who actively spread hate, lies, misinformation, and propaganda to make immigrants look bad/criminal; and you can ask them why they do that.

@o____five And you’re not gonna explain what the hell you’re talking about? Who on the “right” is against immigrants or immigration? Wait? Did you fall for the media propaganda regarding illegal immigration? I got bad news…you’ve been played…I’m from an immigrant household…

@EricMoses_m Aloneness is natural and easy. It feels free. Uncertainty is new. It takes some getting used to.

@o____five It takes a strong mind to find that "comfort in being alone" while the body is shouting. Most people fear the silence, but the real direction is found when you no longer need the world’s noise to feel complete. The uncertainty is just the price of a life well-lived.

Two nights ago, I was at a bar just nursing a drink when I saw this man in his 60s. Total presence full head of white hair, very poised. We happened to be drinking the same brand, so I moved over, exchanged some pleasantries, and just asked him straight up:

@AthenaisdeMont @PeterMoskos I don’t live in the Northeast. I’m not sure what you mean by “get out of my bubble”? I’ve lived in different cities with populations of 100K, 20K, 25 million, less than 1K, 3million, and in the suburbs. Which bubble should I get out of?

@o____five @PeterMoskos 🙄 City dwellers (particularly in the Northeast) are the most parochial people on planet earth. You should really get out of your bubble more.

This is a dirty secret we city slickers prefer not to think about. The best ethnic restaurants are often out in strip malls in the burbs. That's fine, I want good food for all. But we no longer have a monopoly on such wonders.
Emre@emre_mayo

@MiriVinni The restaurants is what most blew me away moving from Chicago to suburbs. Much better ethnic restaurants in the suburbs than the city. Turns out those immigrants fled the city for better schools for their kids too.

@TheCinesthetic I actually don’t remember what happened. It’s one of the least memorable narrative films I’ve seen. I generally remember that it was about the Manson Family and Sharon Tate murder, but what was the climax?

@TerryMoran Seeing the first release in the cinema of Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, 2001, The Shining… these were all shocking and deeply emotional, life-altering experiences.

@TerryMoran It’s likely your point of view on Kubrick’s films that is rigid, not the films. If you didn’t see any of his films during first run, then your take is clinical historian, rather than the experience of being blown away by the shockingly raw emotion they carried when first released

@JamesLucasIT Then why/how are there at least 3 camera shots? One shot is from the top of the steps before he starts running, and when he’s at the top, there are shots from below & above. Did he have multiple steadicam operators in the car with him? Did one go up the steps before him?

Sylvester Stallone said the iconic Rocky steps scene was filmed illegally without permits just before the police showed up. “I wasn't even thinking about steps. We didn't have money to shoot there.” “I just got out of the car, I said, 'Let me run up steps, get a shot of it.'”

@EggerDC The problem with @christopherrufo post is that he turned someone else’s request for advice into a post about his own self-centered anecdotes & opinions. The problem isn’t that he didn’t like McCarthy, it’s that he’s a selfish narcissist who doesn’t care about other people

@christopherrufo @scoutmccomb After reading all your replies here, it is very clear that you seem only capable of writing about yourself in self-centered anecdotes and/or personal opinions. None of what you wrote is helpful to the original poster, who asked for advice to prepare for reading Blood Meridian

I read the first hundred pages of The Road last year, and read the first hundred pages of Blood Meridian this year, and in both instances, gave up, because the books never clicked. Lyrical writing, but the characters are reduced to way down Maslow's hierarchy, and the tone is so relentlessly bleak, with almost no humanity breaking through, it was difficult to feel anything besides the flint clicking against the cold steel in the overwhelming darkness. I know many of you love it, but to me, it's overwrought, overstylized, and overhyped.

About to start Blood Meridian for the first time. Give me all your best advice.
