One says, “Good Morning Lord!” The other says, “Good Lord—It’s Morning!” Who do you think has the better day? The person who expects that “This is the day the Lord has made” will probably seek and find those elements of the day that give one a “pep in the step.” The person who starts the day determined to be miserable will be assured of one thing. Being miserable all day. There was once a young man who decided to be a Trappist monk which would require a vow of strict silence. He would not be allowed to say anything until he had been at the monastery for 10 years. At the end of 10 years, he would be allowed to say 2 and only 2 words. After his first 10 years, he was told he could now speak, but could only 2 words. He said, “Bed hard!” He went back to his duties at the monastery and worked for another 10 silent years. After 10 more years, he was told he had qualified to speak another 2 words. “Food bad!” And with that, he was back to his vow of utter silence for another 10 years. At the end of his next 10 years, he was again given the opportunity to speak , but as before, he was only allowed to say 2 words. This time, he simply said, “I quit!” The Father at the Monastery said, “Well you might as well quit. You’ve been here 30 years and all you’ve done the whole time is complain!” Let’s face it. Being around people who see the best of nothing and the worst of everything is not just unpleasant, it’s poisonous. We all tend to avoid people who can find fault with everything and everyone. A couple of men encountered each other at church, and one said to another, “How are you today?” And the other gentleman replied, “I’m okay…UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES,” to which the first gentleman said, “Well what are you doing UNDER THERE?” And so it goes. If we truly expect things to be unpleasant and rotten, we won’t be surprised when they are! How we start a day will have a lot to do with how it goes. No one would suggest pasting on a phony face and brandishing a forced but painful looking smile. But genuinely having an “attitude of gratitude” not only gives one a better likelihood of a better outcome, but a more pleasurable one. It was famously said by a Baptist pastor in the 60’s when asked why more people were following the Beatles than the Baptists that “The Beatles look like they are going somewhere, and the Baptists look like they are sorry they’ve been.” You have no control over the weather, traffic jams, burned toast at breakfast or the neighbor’s dog barking all night long. But you DO have control over how you react to those irritations. So try starting your day with a “Good Morning Lord” instead of a “Good Lord, it’s Morning!” Your ATTITUDE really will determine your ALTITUDE!
