College tuition has exploded 1,200% since 1980 while wages rose just 213%. In 1963, a student could work a minimum-wage summer job and pay for a full year at the average public university. Today, that same job covers roughly one month of tuition. The culprit isn't corporate greed or underfunding. It's government intervention distorting every price signal in higher education. Federal student loans created artificial demand that universities exploited ruthlessly. When government guarantees endless credit to teenagers with zero income or assets, colleges face no market constraint on pricing. Why charge $3,000 per year when students can borrow $30,000? The money flows regardless of educational quality or job prospects. Universities responded predictably: they jacked up prices and hired armies of administrators to capture this guaranteed revenue stream. Easy credit always inflates asset prices, whether houses in 2005 or degrees today. Free market economists warned this would happen, just as they predicted the housing bubble. When you subsidize demand without increasing supply, prices skyrocket. Colleges simply absorbed every dollar of increased lending capacity into higher tuition, fancy dorms, and bloated bureaucracies. The 1950s model worked because students paid real prices with real money; either their own or their parents'. This created immediate feedback between cost and value. If Harvard charged too much, students went elsewhere. Today, that price mechanism is completely severed. Students don't feel the true cost until years later when loan payments hit, and by then universities already pocketed the cash. Every additional dollar of federal aid generates roughly 60 cents of tuition increases. The government created this monster, feeds it annually through increased lending limits, then acts shocked when colleges behave exactly like the rent-seeking cartels they've become.

@Noahpinion To improve performance, you need to replace deferred compensation with higher salary. Adding a higher salary to the existing regime doesn't change anything.

Well that's sad. But the main point of raising teacher salaries is to attract a better caliber of teachers to the profession.

In 1999, McDonald's paid the US Consumer Product Safety Commission $4 million for failing to report more than 400 kids injured on the old Big Mac Climber jungle gym, including 20 with concussions or skull fractures and 80 with broken bones. A 1995 settlement had already cost them $5 million. Insurance costs climbed for stores that still had playgrounds. In 2011, an Arizona researcher tested 50 fast food playgrounds and found dangerous bacteria in 49 of them. COVID gave them cover to finish the job. On March 16, 2020, McDonald's shut every US PlayPlace overnight. By August, CEO Chris Kempczinski told Time magazine: "I don't know if we've got ball pits in our future." That November the company launched "Accelerating the Arches," a multi-billion dollar remodel plan built around drive-thru, delivery, and digital. McDonald's poured $2.4 billion into store upgrades in 2023 alone. Roughly 2,000 more stores are getting major remodels this year. During those same vanishing years, McDonald's total sales grew from $100 billion in 2019 to nearly $130 billion in 2024. That extra $30 billion was built on drive-thru windows and mobile phones while the play areas disappeared.

@MiniRetireMatt The teacher also has an additional $1m or more in deferred guaranteed compensation. To match this, the lawyer has to lower his income and invest. If that teacher spends 3 to 5 years as an administrator, the value of deferred compensation puts them in the top 1%.

The teacher making $125k per year, with 3 months of PTO, and 35 hour work weeks Is better off than... The attorney making $250k per year, with 1-2 weeks of PTO, and 60+ hour work weeks It's not even close

Now facts: -98% contract Hep B from a parent at birth. -Of remaining 2%, most contract from close household contact. -Adverse event rate: 8-20%. Hep B is more dangerous than adverse event. There's just near 0% risk of contracting it in absence of risk factors

“The state” does not make that choice for anyone. The hep B vaccine is recommended at birth. It is not forced. It never has been. Parents have always had vaccine choice

@Mike_M_Klotz Statistically, the growing percentage of drivers who match her description are the greater risk. Since not-driving means death or poverty for many of them, it's safe to conclude the best solution is risk-lessening accommodation, not denial.

This is a danger to society, not something to be lauded.

@Messinadress1 That was true perhaps 3 generations of working teachers ago. Currently teachers are incentivized by: 1) maximizing their education, mostly in general theory vs. SME, 2) longevity, 3) working as an administrator for their final years. Performance is down. M.Ed and Admin is up.

@CorieWhalen @Noahpinion If you can't follow that perhaps you can understand how I feel. My father died of a stroke following his vax. Would we have given it to him if we had known the now acknowledged stroke risks? Yes. Would we have made sure he was on daily aspirin had we known risks? Yes.

@Convertbond Interesting. Rates temperature inflation, only if the subset of consumers driving spending aren't benefiting from rates. Concentrating wealth has made rates and asset more than a liability since few spenders use debt.

@conor64 Correct. Two of the audiences with a high self-select drive towards leaving are criminals and the destitute. This is why every country in the world - aside from the US - screens for such audiences. And aggressively reports anyone later found to have lied.

A more useful way to think about immigration: the tiny cohort of people who self-select to leave one place and move to another are unrepresentative of the population of the place they're leaving in many ways, including being much better suited to the place they chose to go
