@MaikiSherman You had to go, not because of this trivial kerfuffle, but for your pattern of persistent breaches of the NZJA Code of Ethics that have brought journalism in NZ into disrepute. Key violations: • (1) & (7) — Emotive, one-sided “nightmare poll” reporting that triggered 309 complaints (wrongful emphasis, distorting truth), plus repeated framing of politics through a strong pro-Maori separatist, Critical Race Theory / anti-colonial lens (e.g. budget coverage fixated on “what’s in it for Maori?”, one-sided Treaty/co-governance advocacy) while omitting or downplaying democratic opposition and legitimate public concerns. • (4) & (2) — Aggressive pursuit of an MP into a restricted area, banging on his door & implying negative coverage → 5-day Parliament ban. Taxpayer-funded political editor/media mercenary leftwing extremist activism erodes public confidence in the profession’s integrity. The ethical standards exist for a reason. You breached the standards with impunity for years. Your resignation being coerced is no less than what you deserve for your gross breaches of the freedom of the press.

At the risk of reaping the whirlwind, dismissal was not warranted. It is however the logical endpoint of a media culture that has elevated moral puritanism to an art form. The politics of outrage. Not defending what you said, but it sounded like someone provoked you. As one who was escorted from the TVNZ newsroom for publishing The Paradise Conspiracy, I was wittily told at the time, "live by the word, die by the word". I lived. You will too. Best for the future.

@MaryLTrump Mary, that family cares nothing for you and there’s not one family story that you haven’t already used to keep yourself on television. You’re actually irrelevant. Yes, Mary, irrelevant. You should go somewhere and try to make you a life where you aren’t a family name leech.

@NZNationalParty Taxes are not punishment. I think of taxes as the rent we pay for living in a decent society. The National Party is happy to provide a minimum acceptable home. The ACT Party prefers to be a slumlord. NZ First wants to exclude all Asian tenants.

Labour has a secret tax agenda they aren’t telling you about. Ratings agency Fitch has just exposed it in their latest report, which concluded that Labour would rely on “revenue measures” to get the books back in order. That means more taxes to punish hardworking Kiwis. Labour has already said revenue from their capital gains tax is ringfenced, so that’s not going to make one ounce of difference to the deficit. So how does Fitch conclude a Labour Government would return the books to surplus? Barbara Edmonds has either misled Fitch about their CGT, or Fitch has told about additional tax measures Labour has kept secret from voters. Things aren’t adding up. With billions in new spending and gaps in their numbers, there’s only one way they’ll make it work - higher taxes on Kiwi families. And Labour won’t say what those taxes are. National’s approach is different. On coming into government, we reduced taxes - saving 1.9 million households an average of $60 a week. And we introduced the FamilyBoost childcare tax credit. We’ve had to tighten our belt to make it happen by stopping wasteful spending like the Wellington consultant gravy train. But that’s meant we have been able to deliver tax relief and invest in priority areas like health and education while getting the books in order.

New Zealand's based Deputy PM legalized assisted dying, pushed back against government housing, and went to war with media editors. I asked the great @dbseymour if the welfare state has failed. He said we've had a century of evidence. Draw your own conclusions.

@BenThomasNZ I was in 3.2 back when you couldn't fall out of the bar's comfy chairs, with a cross-party mixed group, late on a Member's Day. A party in the opposition Whips office was going OFF 7 their curtains were open. We saw things. Sordid things. Nobody said anything, 3.2 rules.

NZ political parties don’t hold Thick of It/House of Cards style Mutually-Assured-Destruction “dirt files” or kompromat on each other’s personal lives & scandals, but MPs and the gallery have all witnessed each other’s drunken messiness around the building
