Hajazi who was just targeted was far more than the chief of staff in the Supreme Leader’s office. For years he was one of the most powerful figures around Khamenei and oversaw security for the Leader’s office. Since the late 1990s, many presidential security powers were transferred to Hajazi, including the fight against regime opponents. He worked closely with the IRGC, the Intelligence Ministry, and the judiciary, and served as Khamenei’s envoy in sensitive political and security matters, relaying messages to the heads of the three branches of government.
