@BenjaminMateus7 In both cases the individual had been in a tightly controlled environment the entire time between exiting the ship and testing positive. How is that a failure?

@BenjaminMateus7 Who were the 4 others? Infectious disease specialists wearing PPE? Fellow cruise ship passengers? Random strangers?

THREAD: French & US passengers evacuated from the hantavirus-stricken MV Hondius are now testing positive—exactly as predictable epidemiology warned. This is a catastrophic failure of public health governance.

@InnocenceInv @Plinz And there it is. This has nothing to do with the actual measures being taken or protocols followed, you don’t like who is in charge or the people who elected him.

The Hanta virus strain from the cruise ship has been sequenced, and it appears to be the known Andes strain (high mortality but not very infectious). It seems immoral to send passengers home via commercial flights during incubation period (would you want to be on that plane?)

@DowdEdward I think it’s just a weak positive. We got some of those during Covid. One turned out to be an early positive, a few others were false positives

@InnocenceInv @Plinz Name calling aside- this is very different. Unlike Covid, where people were winning Olympic medals while testing positive, this virus has a 30-40% fatality rate, so people have a strong incentive to notify authorities at the first sign of symptoms and to protect family members.

@sgillern @Plinz Thats what I literally just said and told you why it wont work. People couldn't quarantine for 2 weeks during Covid, they're NOT going to choose to stay in the unit for 8 weeks dumbass.

@zeynep This is a stretch. They have been putting out info and telling the public not to worry is part of their job. They are trying to avoid mandatory quarantines. Doesn’t seem paternalistic to any sane person

One outbreak and the entire “sane” side of public health resorted back to the paternalism of telling us not to worry or “panic”, “this isn’t Covid”, etc. They didn’t learn a thing. We didn’t appoint them to be our therapists or parents. Provide info, don’t dictate how to feel.

@billiewebbb I agree with the skepticism but the people were not diagnosed on the ship. The first guy that died was only diagnosed because of his wife who died at a hospital

a 147 passenger cruise ship somehow had the advanced diagnostics to identify a virus with only ~3,000 cases ever recorded. THE FORESIGHT 👏👏👏 simply amazing. they must have had every test imaginable onboard. the medical world impresses me more and more with each day that pas Nah, fuck right off lol

@colorfuzion_web @HHSGov @CDCgov @ASPRgov @StateDept That’s how you know this is being spun for propaganda. They’re making a narrative that it’s not a big deal even when people are testing positive for a rare and very deadly virus. “Mildly positive” what a shameful statement.

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus. All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus. As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination. Upon arrival at each facility, each individual will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition.

Testing positive without symptoms brings up a number of questions Is this an asymptomatic case or someone that hasn’t developed symptoms yet but is already shedding virus and this was picked up because of daily testing And what does this mean for the possibility of transmission without symptoms - pre or asymptomatic transmission #Hantavirus

@InnocenceInv @Plinz No, they will all go to the National quarantine facility for further evaluation. Then it will be determined if they need/ want to stay and if they can quarantine at home safely.

@sgillern @Plinz They already stated this morning they will not be required to stay in Nebraska, they will be traveling home once arriving. Even if they test them in Nebraska before they leave, a French man tested negative upon exiting the ship today and symptoms started on the flight home.

@InnocenceInv @Plinz They are all going to the bio containment unit in Nebraska. Some may be allowed to leave and isolate at home “If safety protocols allow it”. They will be driven there by officials and monitored daily.

@sgillern @Plinz I looked into this and they are being flown privately to Nebraska, there has been no public statement as to their transportation mode from Nebraska to their home.

In honor of Mother’s Day, a reminder that not all women CAN or WANT to have babies. Peak feminism is understanding a woman’s worth isn’t tied to childbirth. Peak feminism is respecting women whether they raise kids, careers, dogs, or hell. Peak feminism is supporting mothers without acting like motherhood is mandatory. The most radical thing a woman can do is choose happiness over expectations.
